Can I cancel a 3 contract early as i'm emigrating

I've now been a 3 customer for 4 years, always paying my bill on time etc. However in January my old phone broke, and as I was going on holiday 3 days later I decided to upgrade so I could have a working phone in time. I am now 4 months into an 18 month contract. I have now decided to emigrate to Canada. I have rang 3 to cancel my contract but they're saying i'll have to pay the remaining £494. I said I was not willing to pay that. Is there a way I can cancel the contract without paying?
When I go i'll be closing all my bank accounts so they wouldn't be able to get the money anyway, but i'd rather do things properly.

In that case, you need to pay the early cancellation fee.0

Just up and run, would they find you in Canada? ;-) lol
Try writing to them and explain the situation, you may get a better response.
