Blimey, that is awful. I really feel for the family left behind. Shocking story.

I have to say, things aren't that bad for us yet since we work for ourselves and OH does a bit of work for friends when it comes up, so no real problems...at the moment! (There's always night shelfilling at Morrisons I suppose!!)

We have found round our way and in certain parts of Manchester, things look on the up surprisingly as far as extending is concerned. We see lorries full of building materials thundering past our front door to supply the endless amount of extensions etc going up, but something else I have to say too, and it HAS made a difference around here is the amount of migrant workers has increased hugely, so much so that some of the larger corner shops near where my OH works have huge sections selling Eastern European goods.

I'm NOT trying to cause a fight or owt, but believe me, around here it has made a huge difference. Even getting work labouring is hard now.

well i am afraid that the next door neighbour could not face going on to the dole after a lifetime of working and during the night has hanged himself in his garage..this is how bad its getting out there and today i hate all there is to hate about our corrupt and bankrupt system...

Thats very sad news, its a shame he didn't feel he could talk to friends, family or just a friendly ear about his situation.

I had to deal with this a number of times during the early 90's, I hope I don't have to go through it again. Some people on here seem to gloat about prices crashing & people being made redundant, maybe posts like this will make them realise there may be personal tragedies caused by such events.

Finally hitting home. Migrant workers have been taking jobs that we should be doing. There was a programme on the subject last week. Seems that folk are finally waking up to it. It was called Jobs for the New Boys. WAKEY WAKEY!!!!!!!
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Went into pro trade the other day there were two migrant workers in there with what looked like a government official, he was buying them 1000s of £s worth of tools, and quality tools at that (Festool) we don't stand a chance if the government are helping the migrants.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Spoke to a relative today in the south east . Yes work is falling off, my bro-in-law has had to imposed pay cuts for his guys. One minute we need migrant workers to keep up the demand next we have problems. Maybe folk are getting it into their heads that mortgages for most are not affordable.

Im a self-employed bricklayer. From Birmingham, not working at the moment, normally work on house building. Have phoned/looked everywhere nothing. The 3 big house builders have even gone public and said they are cutting back.
Maybe could get work in London or the south east, but when you take out travel/room its not worth it. Anyway i believe there to be a lag here and that will go the same as the rest of the country by the summer.
From my contacts/friends all im hearing is big lay offs and bad news.

Surely we are heading into a recession.

Yes, but they took jobs that not many people wanted. If we have a recession and the pounds keeps weakening against the Euro then many of them will probably move back. That's what I read somewhere.

Sooner they go the better. Our unskilled unemployed should have been made to take those jobs years ago. They have helped drag us down. Immigration and opening the gates etc... We are now starting to pay the price.

But they are just enacting a market economy. As part of the European union they are allowed to do that, just the same way as someone can move to Spain from the UK.
