Talk him out of any spending at the moment.
S Coast, site work is drying up. Still plenty of domestic though.
OH is a carpenter and about to diversify into remade furniture / home items / recycled 'art'. Well we are in Brighton..........
Picked up a load of solid oak stuff for a pound apiece today at auction. :eek:0 -

It was filtering off after xmas and now, he cn't find anything at all, every day is spent with him phoning around all of his contacts and scouring the job centre online, there is nothing!
We are now expecting repossesion as we can't afford the mortgage on my wages alone, we feel like sitting ducks
Sorry to hear thatcan't your OH diversify?

phil_b we definitely do not need it. We have a large house with 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 living areas and a large office where we run our business from. The only problem is we have a smallish kitchen. OH does not want to take a room away to make a large kitchen instead wants extension
. Do not get me wrong it will be a fantastic show piece but whether it will add value I do not know. The other part of the extension will extend our family room to be open plan with a games room. Would be great for kids but certainly not necessity. I would do without it and keep our cash in the bank at least until the economy rebalances.

Well, builders have finally turned up here....fiddly job been on the inbetween big things list for ages...but now they are here and drinking tea....so they are obviously not busy enough to fit in annoying things like this job. That is a bettr sign for us than it is the builders I guess.0

cash is going to be the way of survival in the next few years and for those who dont have any life is going to get tough......tell him in no uncertain terms the is putting you and the family in a bad position. It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -
I'll tell him that we can only do the extension if we cut down on everything, not go out, no holidays, no chinese food, no golf! mmm never mind we will just have no life and stay in for the next few years and the upside is!! We can just live in our gorgeous extension, large kitchen, beautiful view and of course new cooker for me to heat some baked beans up in a pot - might just do the trick:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0

Wow - that is heavy duty. :exclamati
I do feel very bad for the guy - but I'm not sure if it's that bad yet in general. I've only just coughed up £850 for a small section over the extension at back on my mother's house to be retiled - as it had been leaking water into the kitchen, and it only took the guy 2 days. There must have been a fair profit for him in that, even if he didn't work on the 3rd or 4th day elsewhere.
My guess is partly the slowdown - with work still out there - combined with excessive personal debts, which might not be the "system's" fault alone, but a measure of personal responsibility involved too.0 -

I'm so sorry this happened. He must have lost perspective which must be so easy to do in such a dire situation.0
