We took my friends daughter on holiday with us and I realised we had misspelt her surname we where travelling with bmi baby I phoned the call centre and they e-mailed me with a new confirmation with the correct spelling at no charge so it may be worth ringing the call centre I would doubt if they would let your friend travel if it was not changed

Just booked some flights to Cyprus with BA and we put my first name down in its shortened form - "Tim" rather than "Timothy". We thought the world's favourite airline may be a little flexible on an honest mistake (we phoned straight away) but were told that they are unable to do anything without a £30 admin fee being charged. Despite my efforts to point out that £7.50 per letter could be considered a bit pricey in some circles they are so far refusing to change their viewpoint on it.

years ago their policy was "as long as it resembled something like your name"...i have unusual spellings of christian and surname and often had this when other people had booked tickets for me to travel.
today is a totally different environment( and if honest another form of revenue for them)
