Identity theft protection (merged)

Your identity can not be stolen. A thief can use it as a 'jemmy' to break into the bank and steal THEIR money. It is for that reason a better phrase is identity fraud. The person who has had their identity used to steal the bank's money is not the victim (although I can understand why it feels that way sometimes), the bank is the victim. It is the banks responsibility to sort out the crime committed against them, and no charges, fees, etc should be charged to the person whos identity may have been used. It is a different matter if you have had your card stolen and the pin stolen with it, that would be your fault, unless it never reaches you in the post. I find it very annoying that the banks are trying to make out that the customer is the victim and that they are offering a service at best out of the kindness of their heart, and at worst at a cost.0

I have been using TrustedID for a while now and been pretty happy with the service. I researched a few providers and found them to be unique in having a proactive scanning and prevention service. I have read that many of these services don't work as well as advertised, but I've been happy and no incidents yet! (crossing fingers) Here's a good comparison matrix I found in my research:

I wish I could help, but no idea I'm afraid. I am just posting to see what others' reactions are to the Santander hard sell - when I rang to activate my new credit card, they went through a spiel which I stopped after nearly 10 minutes, trying to sell me 'Identity Protection Insurance' or some such for about £85 a year!
Please can some old hands have a quick look at this fairly short thread and give us the benefit of your wisdom?0 -
Just had the same from RBS Mastercard offering the same for £83."I am not young enough to know everything." Oscar Wilde0
