Asda & Tesco cut petrol prices

Most Tesco garages I have seen before and after the "price cut" either haven't dropped their price or have dropped it by around 1p. As soon as I heard the news item last week about Tesco dropping their prices I knew it was a con. They will only drop it if another garage within 3 miles drops it AND they know about it or someone reports it.
Tesco Cardiff Extra had the same price just before and just after the cut. Asda Cardiff Gate of course promptly dropped to 89.9.
At Tesco Shannon's Corner (New Malden) on Sunday, unleaded was 94.9. Esso also at Shannon's Corner (same roundabout) was 93.9. So much for cheapest within 3 miles. And before anyone mentions it, I can't be bothered with the Tesco petrol price promise.0 -
We are all being taken for mugs by the oil companies.
This month for instance the price of oil per barrel has fluctuated btween $40 and $75.Does anyone seriously think that the oil companies bought any oil for delivery at the highest price?
And the oil that they bought this month will have to be paid for before delivery can begin [and they don't need to pay for it until a month has elapsed],then the oil is sent by tanker to a refinery to be converted into petrol or diesel. So it can quite easily take 3 months from the time oil is bought until it is ready to be sold at the pumps.
That is why these companies can knock 4p off a litre now-the oil they are selling at the moment cost them the cheapest price available back in June or July.0 -
Perhaps I was in a different universe, but when exactly in the last month has oil been anywhere near $40 a barrel?tonys wrote:We are all being taken for mugs by the oil companies.

Who did buy it then? It's not as if there are days in the month when nobody in the world buys oil!!!tonys wrote:Does anyone seriously think that the oil companies bought any oil for delivery at the highest price?
No, they can knock 4p off a litre because demand has slackened a bit and supply levels are better than for a few weeks.tonys wrote:That is why these companies can knock 4p off a litre now-the oil they are selling at the moment cost them the cheapest price available back in June or July.
We also need to be consider the impact (albeit small and only UK based) of the stupid panic buying last week. Many tank fills that would have taken place around now, were brought forward and as a result this week will see much less fuel bought on the forecourts, therefore reducing short term demand and allowing prices to fall.0 -
my local tesco in redcar as knocked only 2p off a litre, making unleaded 92.9p,there is a morrisons garage over the road from tesco and they too only knocked 2p off a litre, making their unleaded 91.9p.but i know of 3 other morrisons within a 10 mile radius of redcar that have cut 4p off a litre bringing their prices down to 89.9p a litre.I think its a disgraceful move by morrisons and tesco,as they announced 4p a litre price cuts and have had all the publicity from this price cutting news but have not cut prices at all of there forecourts.unfair move by the top supermarket chains!0

tesco petrol price promise, what a sham, they advertise all over their forecourts low petrol prices etc,and there obviousely not,in my local area they are the most expensive supermarket selling fuel at the moment,3p a litre more than asda/sainsburys,1p a litre more than morrisons 30 yards away, although other morrisons up to 10 miles away are selling at 89.9p,so that is the tesco low petrol price promise.0

I drove to my local Tesco expecting cheaper petrol, however theirs was the same price as the BP garage up the road from me! When I mentioned I was expecting a cheaper price the sales assistants didn't know anything about it!0

I think their comments like "we won't be beaten locally" just mean that they will be no more expensive than the others - not that they will be cheaper. In practice, they don't always even match the cheapest local garage. Those willing to bother with the price promise may benefit from that.
I wish Tesco had a national policy like Asda but they obviously make more money by only being as "cheap" as they need to be.0
