It could be, if I put a stamp on the envelope..... :rotfl:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
@mrbadexample - glad to hear you have a pop up free zone

just a couple of things:
very simply, browsers (such as firefox / IE) read and interpret pages of code and create the web pages you see. as with all things there are well written pages and poorly written ones - firefox usually requires pages to be written correctly whereas IE will cope better with more poorly written efforts. (also - people have got used to IE's ability to do this and thus have become sloppy / lazy / both
)
this leads me on to the other point - extensions.
firefox allows you to add functionality to it by way of what it calls extensions - you can go to a list of these by clicking Tools -> Extensions and then clicking on the 'Get more extensions' hyperlink on that menu.
I would recommend that you have a look at 'IEView' once installed this will allow you to right click on any web page and have it load in IE (in case it hasn't displayed properly in firefox for whatever reason). Also, you may want to look at 'Adblock' this extension will allow you to block any popups, animated picture ads or just general bits of needless fluff that get stuck onto pages nowadays in the increasing attempt to sell you stuff you never knew you never wanted. I take great (perhaps too much) pleasure in cleaning up the pages i regularly frequent and blocking off masses of worthless ads in the process
glad you've got your email back pop up free though

Ok thanks for the techie lesson! I have added the extensions you suggested. Adblock! Adblock! Where has this been all my life? As I mentioned earlier, I use lycos e-mail, which is free, so very heavy on the adverts. I'm gonna have this site down to a skeleton! :T You can have absolutely no idea how happy I am!
I am sure I will take as much delight as you in stripping away this cr*p! :j
My first support question though...(didn't take long, did it?
)...it does seem to struggle a bit at times. Quite often I get "Alert - the document contains no data", when quoting, replying, opening a new page etc. I then have to resubmit. Any ideas what's causing this?
Cheers again! :beer:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
hmmm, that's an error that can be caused by a lot of different things.
- it's possible that the cache of pages on your system (the browser stores pages you have visited for quicker access next time) has become corrupted, clearing the cache and trying again may help:
Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Cache
- it is also possible with some sites that blocking ads can cause this (understandable over zealous use of adblocker?
) this may be evidenced by you seeing the browser trying to load an ad based url in the grey bar at the bottom of the browser before the error appears.
As a possible solution (in part) you could try this:
in the address bar (where you currently see http://forums.monesavingexpert etc etc) type:
about:config
this will display a new screen with a lot of text on it and a filter text box.
start typing the following into that box:
browser.xul.error_pages.enabled
it should dynamically filter to that part of the listing, when you see the specific text as above double click on that line - you should see the setting change from 'false' to 'true'.
this is telling the browser not to display the alert message - it may now display the rest of the page (by skipping the thing it was having trouble with) or it may simply display an error page - i don't use lycos so i don't know for sure.
if you find it causes more problems than it resolves then simply repeat the process above to switch the setting back to 'false'.
you will need to close and restart firefox once you have done this for the change to take place.
hope that helps."Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." (Mark Twain)0 -

Cheers, have tried that to see if it makes a difference. Incidentally, it's not the lycos site where I have the problems, it's this one. I usually have several different forums open at once, I'll hit post in one, and then move to another while it does what it's got to do. This is when I tend to get the problems. I'll let you know if it improves.
Thanks again (you've done this sort of thing before, haven't ya?) :T

smcicr:
a) The problems seem to have gone away!
b) My Lycos e-mail looks like a blank page with a log-in box. (Take that you stupid crazy frog!)
Thanks a lot. :T

mrbadexample wrote:Now then, any tips on how I can bug AOHell as much as they've bugged me?

I did e-mail a complaint to them, and let them know that their advertising was having a negative effect, as not only would I never use AOHell, I would actively discourage anyone from doing so.
You listening Elfmay?
