    Hiya,

You probably wont want to hear this but at the age of 23 I gave up smoking and I knew that if I went near a pub again I would start again, so I avoided pubs and alcohol for the next 3 years until I trusted myself to stay off them.

What about thinking of the potential gf situation in this? Smoking is likely to put a non smoking potential partner off quite a bit and as an ex smoker I would never ever date a smoker as I wouldnt trust myself to stay off the nicotine and as a smoker I didnt like dating other smokers when I was going through the several I need to give up smoking phases I went through. Does that make sense?

    Oh and your SOA.

You need to sort out your mobile!! Are you tied into a contract or has that lapsed? If you cant cut down on the calls/texts, then would it help to increase your tarrif to say 30 pounds but pay less as you are within your allowances?

£180 is a lot of pocket money! Where does that all go? Do you keep a record of it? Instead of going to the pub all the time could you try some cheaper evenings? Going to the cinema perhaps or staying in at someones house and buying some cans?

Yeah it's a lot of pocket money i know. Need to try and cut that down a lot. As for not going near smokers most of the people i know are smokers. I can go without smoking with them untilli go to the pub. I know it sounds daft but i think i could quiete happily not smoke all week but then smoke in the pub. If that one makes sense lol.. I know it's not a good idea but it still gives me access to my friends and people i love.

  • Bloody hell death-a-lot!

Good luck with that whatever happens....just think, you'll have an extra incentive to give up smoking now!

And as for being a "fraud", I have no debt at all but I still post here and everyone is more than welcoming. :)

Just wanted to pop in and say good luck in sorting it. :)

    Re: your account fee

I was paying £11.50 a month to Barclays for a load of benefits I've never used, and didn't dare cancel it in case they took away my £500 overdraft which I was constantly at the bottom of. So I saved up the £500 and then went into my branch to downgrade my account, and it was so easy and I didn't lose my overdraft. I was so annoyed with myself for paying the d*mn fee for a couple of years when I could've saved over a hundred quid a year. The downside to it is the interest rate on the overdraft jumped up, but I haven't done the maths - it might still work out cheaper, depending on the size of your overdraft? Worth looking into anyway. Plus higher interest might mean you had more of an incentive to get out of the overdraft.

Good luck clearing your debt! (And possible fatherhood  )

    Hey there,
Ring Orange and tell them youre thinking of leaving as youre spending too much on your phone. Then ask them to help you find a package that works best for ie, so many free minutes or text and bolt-on for more free one etc. I did and it has made a HUGE difference to my bill! I rarely go over my £25 package but still have LOADS of texts and minutes.
    Good luck!

  • Rather than being critical about smoking (which many non-smokers don't understand - they just think "You have money problems: quit"), you might want to try my (totally legal) way of thinking.

I quit last year, however, for the previous 24 months I was smoking 20 a day for a total of UNDER £15 a month. Legally. And I was smoking what looks like real fags.

It's not going to help your health, but it will certainly help your bank account.

    How to do it?

1st, when the 1p Ryanair flights pop up, book one to somewhere in Spain. Anywhere. Doesn't matter where. Return the same day. Go to said Airport, get lots of packets of Backy.

Next, find a specialist Tobacco shop. Buy a Rizla Concept Machine (you can get these from eBay too). Then go to Tesco and buy a pack of 100 Concept Tubes (99p).

This way it works like this:

    2 x 50g pouches of Tobacco = £10
    5 x 100 pack of Tubes = £4.95
    1 x Ryanair Flight = 2p
Yes, you use more Tobacco than you would rolling your own, but if you buy a poundland tin + Lighter pack (or even better a James Bond style cigarette holder) you look like you're smoking real fags. My smoker friends were really impressed with my money-saving ways (especially the ones who had gone down the roll-ups route).

If you've not smoked baccy before, I would normally recommend Drum or Old Holborn. However, Concept machines prefer dryer baccy so I'd recommend Golden Virginia at this point. The "Gold" versions of Drum and Old Holborn work quite well too.

Before anyone says "But that doesn't help you quit smoking", No it doesn't. But not everyone can quit smoking especially when you're going through a hard time. Unless you're a smoker NOW, it's quite difficult to understand the mindset of a smoker. I no longer smoke. I still regard myself as a smoker and probably will for months to come if not years.

EDIT: I'm abroad right now, but I probably still have at least one concept machine. I'll dig it out this weekend if I can find it. Also, I just remembered, uksmokers.com used to sell online. They still have a shop and I think they do mail order.
The smaller the monkey the more it looks like it would kill you at the first given opportunity.

It's all up in the air about me possibly being a daddy at the moment. She has the signs of being pregnant but i dfon't think she is. I'd be scared poohpoohless if she is but at the same time kinda happy.
