Dead easy money saving if you are on a water meter

Hiya,

I posted an earlier tip from my plumber - use a basin in the bathroom and the basin water collected to flush the loo instead of pulling the cistern handle (he also suggested loo flushing with water from a basin in the kitchen sink).

Too add to this - it is just as easy to put a basin on the floor in the shower. It fills up nicely when taking a shower and again can be used to flush the loo instead of ramping up the water bill by pulling the cistern handle.

Likewise if you take a bath - when pulling the bath plug at the end it's easy to use a basin to collect some of the bath water to flush the loo.

Also if you are running a tap waiting for hot water to arrive - catch the cold water that runs before the hot water arrives with a jug (a fridge jug is the best shape I have found for storing when not in use). This water is then perfect for watering plants.

Best regards

How much water(in litres) do you think those measures will save per year?

How about using next door's unmetered suppy by rerouting his pipe and buying him dinner?

    Hi all,

To reply to some of the points above:-

Please pardon my innocence as I don't understand comment #5 as the whole point of this suggestion is to avoid flushing using the cistern. Please pardon me if I didn't articluate my original point clearly enough (I am happy to try again if required) and similarly my apologies if I am being a bit dim in missing your point.

Comment #3 - saving depends on how often you flush the loo and the type of flush that the cistern has. I got a plumber in to convert the flush in my cistern from the old UK style flush to the new EU flush which I believe saves 3 litres per flush (according to the plumber who gave me the ideas listed above).

Point #2 is absolutely fair comment. It just depends on where personal priority is between saving a few quid or saving a few seconds. I haven't done anything to check how much I am saving cash wise but I suspect that it is quite a bit. I live alone and from re-using water in the manner suggested above I am down to a couple of cistern flushes per day maximum.

    Regards,
    S

The combined cost for water and sewerage for myself is under £2 a cubic metre; and I am far from the cheapest in UK.

So the cost of a litre of water is approx 0.2pence.

So by going through the procedure above - with water from bath or shower for the loo - and assuming I save 3 litres every time, I will have to perform that procedure over 150 times to save £1.

I suggest for most of us it is simply not worth the effort!

So how do you flush without using the cistern? Pouring water down the toielt doesnt flush it

I assume that the idea is to take the top of the cistern and pour the water in quickly before the cistern refills! Or perhaps they disconnect the water to the cistern.

Makes it even more of a hassle if you have a modern cistern where the top screws on.

So the term 'spend a penny' perhaps should be changed to 'save a fraction of a penny'!!!

no you'd just flush the toilet by pouring the water into the bowl for a height.

maybe if you could keep re-using the same bath water. just let out a little bit each time, and refill that with hot water to make the bath warm...
