I have a serious problem with my email

I have discovered a problem with one of my old email accounts. I asked here because I get a lot of help from posters on this site, not just money related.

Today I discovered that there were firewall blocked and delivery failed messages apparantly sent from my account. I had not know what they are and did not know how they occured. I was worried that someone was going through my account i.e. hacked into it. I am worried and do not know what to do. My problem is similar to the one brought up in this thread

http://windows.ittoolbox.com/groups/technical-functional/windows-xp-pro-l/how-to-stop-net-hacking-1742103#

It was an old email account which I never used on f2s but I checked it for an old email and discovered this.

I am very worried and I am grateful for any help. Thanks.

It's more than likely that some spammer has just harvested your e-mail address and as such your address has been black listed & blocked on a number of sites.
If you haven't used it in a while forget it.

Its very easy to send emails from other email addresses. I could send an email from billgates@microsoft.com if I wanted without knowing his username and password or anything. All you require is an SMTP server - something many ISPs provide with their accounts.

What is probably happening is that a spammer has decided to make it look like the Spam he is sending is coming from your address. Now he sends out this Spam to thousands of e-mail addresses - many of which won't exist. What then happens is the mailserver that receives the message bounces it back to say the address doesn't exist (like you may have seen before when you send an email) because the message has appeared to come from you that bounced message gets sent to your address.

There is nothing to worry about and there is nothing you can do about it really. I've had it happen to me in the past, but it often stopped after a few months. The people that investigate who sends Spam (if there is anyone - sometimes it happens) will know that you haven't sent the spam as there is header information contained in the email which tells them the server the email was actually sent from - rather than the email address.
