I have been using energy saving bulbs from the very first, when they were so heavy they would practically bring down the ceiling. :D In my experience, they frequently fail prematurely and are slow to give off their maximum light, whereas led bulbs do not suffer from these drawbacks. Even if the low energy bulbs do manage seven or eight years, by that time they have become so inefficient that they are little better than standard bulbs. Our house is rapidly going over to leds, particularly as they are now being made with bayonet-cap fitting. Using GU10 leds, the consumption in our dining room has been reduced from 500 watts to 16 watts. There is now a BC led bulb (1watt) suitable for low-level wall lighting, cost £3.50. There will eventually be replacements for all types as the technology advances.
I also use led bulbs in my car. My stop, brake and reversing lights have all been replaced. At about £2.50 each, they are only marginally dearer than normal bulbs.
  • Thanks Orsen but I was referring to Megaman "My Planet" energy saving bulbs.

Orsen has got it spot on - We recently had an extension kitchen diner, study, downstairs cloaks, all installed with GU10s 50W halogen, a total of 24 bulbs (inc 6 in the hallway). If they were all on at once they would be using 1.2kW, I think the maths is right.

I decided to experiment with leds but I wanted a bit brighter so checked out the internet and bought some on Ebay from Hong Kong (yes I know I was taking a chance). They turned up fairly quickly well packed and I was surprised at how much light they gave out in downstairs cloaks although a fairly small area (4 bulbs 20 leds each).

I then progressed to 48 led bulbs in the study (warm white which give a sort of yellow glow) perfectly adequate and 48 led bright white in the hall again perfectly adequate.
The kitchen diner being a much larger area, I wanted to see if there was anything brighter and emailed my Hong Kong (trusted friend by now) to see. At that time they were starting to do 72 led bulbs so I got 10 (needed 9, 1 spare) for the kitchen diner.

Now there is no doubt that they are brighter but in fairness although the light is adequate it is not as bright as 50w halogens but they consume 3W of electricity. The other areas are all downlighters where they are much more effective but in the kitchen they are on 3 sets of fittings where you can angle them and the light dispersal is not as good.

I would however recommend you try leds as the saving on power is incredible and practically a lifetime guarantee on the bulbs. If anyone is interested there is an assortment of different types of leds available inc screw in bulbs from this shop http://stores.ebay.co.uk/w6trade which I have used with no problem.

just thought I'd do an update , some of the Led's in the bulbs are already failing so I may look at changing the type of bulbs/fittings
