ADSL - Do I need to subscribe for a phone line too?

I'm about to move into a student house and internet is pretty much a necessity.

We all have "Three" phones (with the massive free calls allowance) so we really dont need a 'house phone' - do we need to pay for one in order to get broadband installed?

Also, (unfortunately) the house isn't in a cable area.

Cheers.

No,you don't. You can use something like; http://www.mynow.co.uk/
  • If your not in a cable area and you want BT broadband then you WILL need a BT phone line.

You might be able to get wireless from some other company.

Or you might be able to share with another student house via Wifi?

Now also known as netvigator is a crap company-weve been signed up for 10.5 months but the service hasbeen !!!!e. They never replied to email complaints and so i caleld them in july- they promised to sort it which they havent and have now told me two stories, 1. its a new compnay and the problems im encoutnering is also effecting other people 2. im on the edge of a base station so my signal is effected and can be poor- they promised me line rental refund for a few months in july and then cos they hadnt sorted it i complaind againa nd in august they promised it again...and guess what, the july moeny was only recently paid by chasing them up and the august refund is less than what i thought as theyve said in august we dropped our charges so u get 2 months refund based on current prices (not that ive seen this money yet).....i pointed out that the charges may hav come down in august but the actual service interruptions were happening while i was payign the higher price- i was then told if the service does not get any better then we can come out of our contract early.......so last week i stated just that and now the guy was getting funny about it- he told me to email the director of the company, which i did and for a whole week i have had no response........

if anyoen who works for now / netvigator is reading this then i would like to add that i wish your company the worst!
they are conners since they have been taking my money and fobbing me off with sorting the service out-my speed test showed me my down load was 108 meg and upload was 16meg when im paying for 512meg......i feel i should take it further as they are a p*sstake.

In short do not join up with Now (old name was netvigator) unless you are prepared to wait a year for your problems to get resolved if you encounter any.....my brotherinlaw has Now and he also complains of the speed!

I don't know this company, so can't recommend them but found them interesting as they have contract and PAYG service plans:
AVC Broadband - ADSL, Satellite Broadband

    Satellite Broadband for the Home

Using the same dish as that used for satellite television we can provide broadband download speeds from 256Kbps to 2Mb. Prices start from only £9.99 per month.

Our unique GPRS service allows you to use a satellite dish to receive information from the Internet at speeds up to 2Mb but without the need for a landline telephone.

    Kind regards
