TV Licensing APR Shock

  • nothing about the bbc license is fair - paticularly as the equivalent of over 3000 people paid the annual fee and it was given to Greg Dyke as a golden handshake! I wonder if we could find 3000 people who desperately could do with an extra £112 a year, i'd say its do-able!
:D I understand ALOT more than I care to let on :D
  • My daughter is a student sharing a tiny flat with 4 other students, but they each have a separate rental agreement. According to the tv licencing people, this means that each of them need a separate licence - £126.50 each, totalling £632.50! She'd only been there 3 days when the tv licence KGB came and started threatening them with £1000 fines...each!!!

The best deal must be to save up for a year before the licence is due, gaining a bob or two of interest, and pay for it in full (by Credit Card that gives you Cash Back or AirMiles or whatever is your preference) when it is due.

It is only genuine 0% interest deals that beat this arrangement - for example, NEVER pay your Council Tax in April, even if you can afford to, as they will give you interest free credit through the year. And given how high Council Tax is these day, the interest gained that way is more than a bob or two.

I agree that the tax is too high considering that only about 50% of the content on the BBC is worth watching. I feel a bit cheated to pay for all the cr**p they broadcast till 19.00, like repeats of house and gardening programs (I have better things to watch when I get the time, and I really don't give a flying monkey about these subjects), after 19.00 it is often a superior television to ITV and Five. If you ever been to the US and some countries in Europe where there is no tax on public TV and you managed to sit in front of the box for a while, than good luck to you!! It is a cultural desert of adverts and hopping young girls in very short garments. So maybe something like
£50-70 would be more suitable, I don’t mind paying for quality content (BBC4 and BBC2) after all road tax is about the same for most drivers and I do not think that making television cost as much as our roads. Or maybe I am wrong and need to get my facts in place.
Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

you can get a swipe card to pay your licence, starts at 5.00 per week if on benefits or 21.00 a month if not. You can pay at Post Office or Paypoint but unlike stamps if you lose your card no-one else can gain.No extra charge either.
  • Hi,
tv licence going through the roof over next few years, don't know about anyone else but i pay to watch tv channels through sky, don't even have aerial going into sky box so why should i pay twice for the same old rubbish!!
  • For not paying for the TV licence. I had a look at http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/information/index.jsp#link5

I'd seen in the paper about the seperate licence for the radio being got rid of in the early 1970's, which suggested that you need a full TV licence to listen to the radio. But I see no mention of this on the tv licencing site, so it certainly appears your OK if you just watch DVDs. Some sites mention this is fine, but suggest you get approval in writing from TV licencing.

  • I used to know a guy who worked for the detector people and he said that there was nothing inside their vans to detect who had a TV but I don't know how true that is. He advised me to buy a black and white licence - can you still get them?? - because it's cheaper than a colour, and once you have a licence (even if it's B+W) they leave you alone. I tried this for years and never once got hassled by people knocking on the door or any threatening letters. I only stopped because we have a satellite dish outside so it's a bit obvious now that we have more than a B+W TV!!

Don't know about the detector vans, but it is probably fair to say that if there is no TV licence and no TV and they have previously verified this they will leave you alone.

They are most likely to come to your house if there was one at that address recently, then suddenly there isn't one.

Saying that, they are also pretty stupid! I moved into a new build house, a couple of weeks after moving in either the post office or the developers decided to deliver all the mail which had been sent to the house (bear in mind the house had only been livable for a couple of weeks).

I had 8 letters from the tv licence people, varying in colour from green through to nice deep red, asking, demanding, then threatening me for a tv licence depsite the fact the house was still foundations when the first letter was sent!
