but think of the saving you'll make buying USD instead of EUR....

plus cost of eating out etc... cheaper in US than Europe.
Please take the time to have a look around my Daughter's website www.daisypalmertrust.co.uk

We went to Salzburg city in Austria last December using cheap Ryanair flights from Stansted airport. All buses go to the main train station from the airport and you change there onto another bus to get to the centre os Salzburg (transfer time about 20 mins including bus change-think stop was called Ratasse, but bus driver will tell you when you pay on the bus, plus the bus clears out). It has a lovely cathedral. There is a lovely old, very well preserved castle fortress high on the hill, that you get to via a hill lift. The castle has an old fashioned puppet theatre and gilded rooms. The views from the castle are superb. There was a great Christingle market, with such atmosphere. Everywhere you go they have stalls and outlets selling hot alcoholic punch. There were outdoor skating rinks. Wonderful choirs singing. They had horse drawn carriage rides around the city for about £25 per carriage. Nearby is Mozarts house and the museum, plus the ice caves. We did not get a chance to go on a sleigh ride through the woods in the dark as ran out of time-but I understand that it is really good. We plan to go back again this year, as we enjoyed it so much. They have some lovely 5 star hotels overlooking the river in the city. The transport was good and seemed to be fairly cheap. Everyone spoke English, so getting around was no problem.

What about Prague? Beautiful city and they have Christmas markets and lovely decorations. It can be cold but there is nothing nicer than a hot wine in a warm bar with a roaring log fire after a hard morning's sight seeing.

Some of the popular touristy cities are lovely - and quieter - in the winter. We went to Venice and it snowed! It was fabulous seeing it in the snow and we were in St Marks Square with only about a dozen other people!

Madeira for a short haul and expensive tatse can be catered for here there are some very exclusive hotels to be pampered in, and weather should be ok too.
Done these myself Boston last December and loved it very snowy mind but worth it really enjoyed the Omni Parker hotel lots of history and ambieance and then went to Madeira for a short break last January for a winter sun trip again really enjoyed ourselves done a dolphin whale watching tour tour of the island and lots to eat and drink.

£800(£400pp) will get you a Balcony but not a lot of use on this route due to weather, since this price includes food for 3 days you could up the budget and get a suite.
