I'm trying to install an Epson DX8450 all-in-one printer but got the following error message:
The file 'usbscan.sys' on Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM cannot be found.
Insert Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM in the drive and click OK
Error Details:
The following error occurred. 'The file was not found' (Error #2)
Set up could not finish opening a file on the source disk
Source file: 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\net\WIN98SE\usbscansys'
Destination file: 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\usbscansys=DRIVER20.CAB'
I'm not very computer literate and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I am a 'newbie' to this site, so apologise if I make any mistakes. I also have limited internet access, so may be slow in replying.
Thank you

You have checked this printer can be set up with win98?, they are very rare nowadays
anyway the file the install routine is looking for cannot be found in the folder it is looking in =C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\net\WIN98SE\usbscansys
the file it needs is in DRIVER20.CAB, now this is acompressed archive of many files and may be supplied by epson or by microsoft, though i think its the latter.
search your system for that file name, or put the windows98se cd in drive and point the browser to it its in a folder on the cd called win98

oemsetup
oemesetup
precopy1, 2
save32
scandisk
scandisk
scanprog

setup0, 1, 2
smartdrv
suback
sucatreg
suhelper

win98_21 - 74
win98_ol

Do you have any more advice, please?0 -
the file you are looking for is driver20.cab, the file "usbscansys" is inside that its a "cabinet" file like a zip or rar archiveclick here to achieve nothing!0

@ih8stress
If you can't find it on the CD there's a downloadable USBSCAN.SYS file for Windows 98se available from here:-http://usbman.com/Drivers%20and%20Patches.htm
(near the bottom of the page).
When you download the file I think that you need to copy/paste it into WINDOWS/SYSTEM folder. Maybe someone else will verify this.

not a good idea as there are probably a few files involved in the install process and differing versions may conflict, let the install routine decide which is usedclick here to achieve nothing!0 -
Name: usbscan.sys
Modified: 23/04/99 22.... Size: 8,944 Ratio: ? Packed: ?
I'm not sure what the icon is before it, as I said previously I'm not very up on computers.
Could you please tell me what the next steps are?
Thanks0 -
Nobody's come up with a 'good idea'.
So, browse your hard drive and see if there is a folder
c:\windows\system\drivers
or
c:\windows\system32\drivers
If so, copy and paste that usbscan.sys file from the cd into the drivers folder.
Then try to do the install again.

It has been a while since I did this with Windows 98, but the procedure is, I think, as follows -
- Put Win98 disc in CD drive.
- Go to "Start" then "Programs" then "Accessory" then "System Tool" then "System Information" then "Tools menu" and "System File Checker".
- Choose "Extract one file from the installed disk".
- Type in "USBSCAN.SYS" for the system file name and click "Start".
- Type in your drive letter for the CD drive followed by ":\Win98".(For example "D:\WIN98").
- Type in the correct path "C: \Windows\System32\Drivers" and click "OK".
- The "Extraction completed" message appears. You'll find "USBSCAN.SYS" in "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers".

I've inserted the windows98 CD, selected browse, clicked on Win98, clicked on driver20 and found:

you can copy and paste that to your desktop so you can find it easily or when installing the printer and it comes up and asks for the file, swap disks and point "that" file browser window to the win98 cd and that win98 folderclick here to achieve nothing!0 -
