We moved into a new build in Sept 07 started paying the water staright away and they calculated it the same as our last house £30 per month..fine so have been paying it..BUT we keep getting the odd £50 bill here and there and even though i have asked why they just tell me it needs paying etc so we pay..
Last night my neighbour collared me and asked what we paid and then told me hers was £80 per month for just her and her baby, she uses far less than we do as not at home but even though i work from home i don't use a lot at all( as i know how pricey it is!)..
We have decided to take up the meter covers outside later and take a note then check it a couple of hours later and hope it hasn't moved! What happens if it does? how can i find out where the leak is? is it our problem?
Is their anything else we can do?
Thankyou for any replies

If you do have a leak as long as its before the meter its the water companys responsibility and they can take a leak allowance off your bill. I think if its ater the meter, so the pipe leading to your house its your repsonsibility? or your landlords if you rent

no sorry just looked it up and found this:

All property owners are responsible, by law, for maintaining the underground water service pipe that runs from the boundary of their property into the home. In other words, if there is a leak on this part of the service pipe within the property boundary, the responsibility for making a repair falls to the property owner. In some circumstances, responsibility may extend beyond the property boundary.

so i wasnt far wrong lol

but if its on the part theyre responsible for they will give you a leakage allowance

If there is a leak and you are in new builds, try taking it with the builder or site agent.
If building work is still on-going and you get no joy, then hang around the office/showhouse and chat to potential buyers.

Thanks for the replys..emweaver we pay £30 per month plus the odd £50 ones we keep getting so quite a lot each month..
We are in a new build but if it is our responsibility how would we know where it is leaking from under the road as such? we are metered and have been since we moved in obviously!
