Am thinking of buying a new computer soon. Please how do I transfer my internet connection dial up to the new one. I am interested with a Dell Dimension desktop 5100 but it says 56K modem with Tiscali broadband. Is the modem built in, do I have to take boardband with them/ I do intend to change to broadband as soon as I change computer. I have heard so many negative feedbacks with Tiscali and do not want to go with them. At the moment I am with Btyahoo surftime 24/7. Any recommendation, please? Thanks

To set up your dial up connection on a new computer click on start---control panel----network connections
at top left hand corner click on "create a new connection" and just follow the instructions.
Tiscali are crap and you don`t need to go with them, their software may be included with the new Dell but you can always remove it.
You will need a 56k modem included with your Dell, obviously for dialing up.
Dell are always doing good deals so don`t rush in and keep your eyes on these boards for them.
Another good site for Dell deals posted is https://www.rpoints.com0 -
just copy down the number, username, and password - you use to dial in for bt yahoo - then there is a manually setup procedure you can follow in order to set it up
tiscali just pay dell a sum of cash so they have exclusive internet provider on the machine, so people like you may think you can only have tiscali, but you can have anyone you want - you can basically call it advertising0 -
You do not have to take broadband, and Dell are simply encouraging you to buy broadband - the PC would only come with a broadband modem if you chose to get broadband.
To transfer your internet connections depends on your version of Windows (it will work between different versions, but the instructions on how to get there differ), so what Windows are you using?0 -
I`ve just had a quick look at the Dell site for the 5100 and the Tiscali Broadband is NOT included,it`s an optional extra.
New Dells come with Windows Home edition as standard.
The price is £471 with a 17" crt monitor,I`m sure there will be a better deal than this at sometime.
Anyway what`s wrong with the 30000 -
I am looking at the 3000 as well as I will only use it for internet and the children may use it to download music. I am not a heavy user. Thanks for your help.0

I am using windows 98 at the moment but intends to buy the Dell 3000 or 5100. I am just wondering whether it will be much easier if I get another CD and insert it in the new computer? Thanks for your help.0

How does this rpoints work out? Please can someboy explain it to me. I have just been to their website and do not know what I am supposed to do apart from registering and what will happen next? Thanks.0

A new Dell will come with windows XP Home Edition already installed on it,which is a whole lot better than 98 and more stable.
Once you get used to it (very easy) you won`t entertain 98 ever again.
Rpoints is a similar site to this only nowhere as good but every so often someone posts the latest Dell offers on the "offers" board.
They are also posted on this site usually under "grab it while you can".
Another site is https://www.hotukdeals.com
It`s just a matter of keeping your eye on the boards and if you see a suitable deal go for it.
There have been some real bargains and some price mistakes but as far as I know Dell has always honoured the orders.
I have a dimension 3000 and find it quite adequate for for most internet usage
these have been going for under £300 recently.0 -
In windows 98 go to Control Panel then Network Connections and look for the one which is your dial up ("BT Yahoo" or something). Right click it and there should be an option to export or copy or something, then put this file on a disk and paste it to the same location on your new Dell. If you can't copy it, just open it and write down the phone number it dials, and your username/password then type it in manually in your new PC.0

Certainly better and easier than putting a CD in and letting that brand everything. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0
