    Hi All

I bought an easiyo and have tried it twice, both times it hasn't come out right. I have read the other big thread about the easiyo and and various methods of making the yoghurt with uht milk...mine just won't thicken!!

Attempt 1 - I used litre of UHT milk and a few spoons of the sachet mix that came with it. It came out barely thicker than milk and tasted sour and tangy.

Attempt 2 - realised I had forgotten to put the dried milk in the first attempt. So used 1 litre of UHT milk, 2Tbsp of live organic yoghurt, 2Tbsp dried milk 1Tbsp Sugar. I left it from 8am until 8pm yesterday. It came out tastng fairly nice but still very runny, think not quite as thick or creamy as a muller light yog.

I just don't know what else to try - Please help.

you seem to have got the method right, if you strain the yog thru' a j-cloth in a colander or sieve, all the whey runs out ( a clear yellowish liquid) then pour the yog into a bowl and whisk well. This breaks down the lumpy bits and leaves you with lovely creamy yoghurt.
    good luck

This thread might give you some ideas:

I have read the runny yoghurt thread, didn't really make me any the wiser..

powershopper - would whisking it as it is help at all. I don't really want to start having to strain it and whisk it really. I wanted to try to keep things as simple as possible, but I would have a go at just whisking, if it was worthwile.

I did use semi skimmed uht, but read a few people had used this with some success.

Also the yog I have in the fridge, is it safe to eat then, even though it is runny??

  • When I use the easiyo, I fill the thermos right up with boiling water and put the lid on before I even start just to preheat the flask. Then I empty that water out, (using it for soaking the dishcloths or such like, of course) and refill to the very top of the baffle, then I put the yogurt container in, the water comes up almost to the to of the container, but that's fine. This usually works for me, but if it's still runny in the morning, I just refill with fresh hot water and leave it a bit longer.

In that case, maybe it would be an idea for you to describe exactly what you did. I use an Easiyo maker (but using live yogurt and UHT milk, not the sachets) without any trouble.

On the second attempt I used live yoghurt, 2Tbsp worth........should I have used more maybe?

This is what I did - I poured semi-skimmed UHT milk into the easiyo then added 2Tbsp, of dried milk, 2Tbsp of live yoghurt and 1Tbsp of sugar. I then mixed and shook it up, put the lid on. I then poured boiling water up to the top of the red baffle inside the easiyo flask and put the pot in, left it for 12 hrs....well checked after 8 but it didn't seem done so left it longer.

I will ge some more UHT on monday, but don't want to keep wasting them so any ideas before I re-try would be great.

I use 1/3 of a 500g pot of live yogurt and fill the Easiyo to 1litre. Maybe you haven't enough culture

You said that your milk had started to taste sour. That means that the fermentation is taking place. Maybe add more live yogurt and start again.

I don't have an Easiyo but have made lots of yogurt successfully. Two things occur to me:

    1) The first batch often seems a bit runny - not as runny as you describe though.

    2) I've only had real success with full fat milk - semi skimmed and skimmed didn't work for me unless I used powdered milk as well. 1 litre of full fat milk and two tablespoons of starter yogurt worked fine.

I can never get semi skimmed to thicken. I gave up and now just do full fat.
