Possible dumb q- how do I check if phone locked to a provider?

I have a decent phone which is surplus to my needs as I changed contract. It is a Sony Ericcson w880i. I want to try and sell it on but how do I check if it is available to any network or locked onto o2?

try a sim card from a different network.

turn the phone on (with or without a sim, it doesnt matter), key in <**< (where < is left on the navigation pad and * is star). if all of the padlocks are open then its unlocked.

When do you do that? Tried it on my w910i, and it doesn't do anything.

at the main standby screen. you should get a message saying personalized by mnc3 or similar then a screen looking like this:



ive only tested it on db2010 and db2020 phones, but i guess it still works on a db3150 phone

Mine just comes up with "ESL", and its locked. Knew my phone was locked, we just removed the T-mobile software as that bugged me like mad.
