This wonderful website fails from the same disease that every other thread on here and almost every other thread on every LARGE website forum does. It just becomes spammy, bloaty and contains unverifiable majority-unbalanced opinions of bias. It is a real shame that the internet forums, in most cases, are not achieving anything other than needing to archive vast amounts of a high ratio of bloat-to-factual text.
It is a natural progression due to social computing unfortunately.
This site is also extremely large and almost unwieldy but what a site it is and started by one man's vision of "screwing the financial institutes etc BACK" as revenge for the greedy, corporate attitudes lol. I totally respect the website's aim but I think that it is too overdone. This website is once of my favorite money saving reference sources due to Martin's research and his reputation.
Therefore, please do not think for one second that I intend any negative criticism towards this site.
Take, for example the online spectacles thread (try looking for it lol)
There are so many untraceable, unverifiable, bias-disputable opinions spread over 95 pages since 2004 (or roundabouts) that its quite hard to even begin to get an opinion of which online company is consistently good.
The site is so large that I did not even want to look for a poll for the spectacles thread.
Is it possible that a serious, sticky, short term (say 3 months) poll (including email link invite to give fair results) could be created in cases like this?
There are about 5 specs companies online that seem to get the most attention from here, but which is really consistent?
The poll would need to allow only mse members who have a big involvement in MSE, so for instance, with my post count, I would not be invited as, even though I have had a long term membership here, I have not really contributed much.
The poll, therefore, would need to have certain parameters:
1) Members would need to have owned the specs without any noticeable problems arising for at least 3 months or so (It would be your job to decide the variables, at the end of the day)
2) Members would need to have maybe 5-10 posts per day and be involved for at least 3-6 months, showing their positive involvement in the site, other than for financial reasons or biased promotion of affiliated services.
3) Members would perhaps qualify by their "no. of times thanked" status. This is a good thing as it shows that their posts are of good value.
4) The poll should include stats for each company, such as email/phone response times, technical response times, first time spec. manufacture quality for the member concerned etc etc.
There are plenty of other threads out there that could do with the same approach.
Wading through hundreds of pages of obsolete opinions is a waste of time. Only the last 6 months experiences etc need to be counted.
I find that so many people are willing to respect a company based on it's first success, but not its aftersales, customer service etc. (double glazing recommendations are a classic example)
I hope this idea is a benefit and not a burden.
Best regards.
