I'm 33, but when I first started 'old styling', I was just 18/19 (expecting my first baby). Shame I lost the habit or I'd be rolling in it by now LOL.
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

Don't throw away food challenge started 30/10/11 £4.45 wasted.

I'm 29 and was born an old styler!! lol

I was bought up by my gran who came over from foreign lands and simply couldn't live anyway else. She was very strict, I wasn't allowed to ride bikes or do any 'boyish' things. I could however, make a full Jamaican Sunday dinner (stew chicken, rice and peas, salad, macaroni cheese and Guinness punch) by the time I was 10.

I do thank her for it now! Baking wasn't her strong point though so I'm learning that on here.
Getting there... A deal at a time. :T

I am 31. Have always been old style when it comes to cooking, although not quite as frugal as I have become since discovering you lot. Part of it was probably due to having been caught up in a war when growing up - our frugality had to be quite extreme due to circumstances, so it seemed quite perverse to insist on it once I was "all growed up" and living in a land of plenty.

I am getting over it quite quickly now, though - and proud to be a frugalista. I think I will always draw the line at reusable sanitary pads, though - some scars just run too deep... ;)
  • As one of the errm.. slightly dottier old dears on here I am pleasantly surprised at how many young people have joined. The media would have us believe that young people aren't 'bovered' about cash and/or the environment but it seems that there are a lot of people on here who,to me at least at 67, are quite young. Well done to you 'young folk' that includes the 30-50 age groups I think you are doing really well to think twice about throwing your cash about.
I have always been on the sensible side when it comes to splashing the cash, not tight, but just like good value for money. Wartime and 1950s austerity drills it into you, plus having a very careful Scots Mum helped as well.
Passing on tips to others helps no end and I have heard of things on here that wouldn't have occured to me ,so one is never too old to learn a new trick or two. keep up the good work chums
  • hi everyone
i'm 28, single, share a flat with another girl. i'm very lucky in that my parents brought me up to cook and bake etc, although my mum now says that she feels bad that she didn't teach us to clean better!
i've been very slack OSwise for some time - i moved to london a few years ago and lost all control of my lifestyle! i'm only realy now getting control of it again but the tips on here are great, really getting me back on track.
like so many others have always said - i'm always amazed by how many people my age have no idea about these things. i'll bake an all-in-one sponge for a birthday and everyone goes crazy about it! i'm so grateful to my parents for making sure i was capable before i left home...

  • I am 31 too, live with OH andf DS (19months).
Mum cooked, shopped round to save pennies, knit all our clothes and even the blankets on our bed. I went to uni and still cooked for myself etc, but eventually this wore off. 2 years ago while pregnant, I realised I needed to make cut backs and used this site (Debt free is my home but increasingly more so the old style threads)
I love it, I do use washable san pro, sometimes use washable nappies, have hand me downs for son, make extra portions to freeze, I buy minimal clothes for myself, but tend to go for quality that will last, I have experimented with growing things in the garden and will hopefully extend this next spring.
I want my little boy to grow up old style, to know where potatoes come from (not the shop), to think about his impact on the planet etc.

  • I haven't been able to read all of this thread.

I am as old as my tongue and a little older than my teeth.

I do wish that there had been an option to say how old you feel  I feel distinctly older than my physical age and don't get me started on how policemen look
