Satnav for fiftysomething technophobe!

Well, I am not completely technophobic, I am on the computer now and have a mobile phone, but don't do anything too technical. I am also a rubbish map reader!

Would like a satnav for my next birthday this summer just for use in London, which I would share with my dh and dd (22). What would be the best? I have been told that TomTom is good. Frankly, I can't get my head round the idea of a satnav in the first place!

Thought of hiring one for a week first to get used to the idea....

TIA
Louise

A lot depends on what functions you want. I've got a Garmin Nuvi 250 but you won't go far wrong with a Garmin or a Tom Tom.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

I borrowed a friends tom tom for our holidays in America, I was impressed with it. I'm going to buy one myself now.

Quite straight forward to use aswell.

Tomtom is idiot proof. Even my dad can use one and he's even more of a technophobe than you - refusing to even touch a computer. :D

Another vote for Tom Tom, you can't really go wrong with them, been using one for years via a PDA, but the all-in-ones are even better.

There is a good comparative review of hand-held and in car GPS units in the current PC Pro magazine (issue 165, July 2008).

They pick the Tom Tom Go 720 as the winner, the with Sony NV-U93T as the runner up. They also test Route 66, Magellan, Medion, Navman, Garmin, Satmap, Polar, Suunto and a Timex device.

Avoid the "Atmos" brand. Rumour has it they are dangerous! ;)

I use a "TomTom ONE V2" whatever that means. It works well, apart from its occasional attempts to make me drive up a 3 foot wide bridle path or through a padlocked gate! It also suggested that I turn right off a main road in Huddersfield and go the wrong way down a one-way street. Luckily, I spotted the No Entry sign before I indicated!

As the above posts indicate, sat navs are not foolproof, you have to use them for a bit, and get used to their little foibles, but on the whole, for anyone who regularly goes to strange places, they are the single greatest invention of the last 10 years. Brilliant. Mine is an old tom tom 1, with upgraded maps, speed cameras, (essential), and Europe, which works a treat. If you seldom go to strange places, waste of money, otherwise, excellent.

    speed cameras, (essential),

I have to disgree. With the TomTom telling me where to go, I have more time to look for speed signs and am much less likely to exceed the limit inadvertently.
