A really detailed explanation, thank you for taking time to do this.

I have cut my hours at work as it was getting too stressful but we could really do with the money, lol! So, this sounds ideal.

I would only want to do a couple of days, but be home to walk the dogs/have lunch.

Thanks again, this has really helped. I have applied to parcelnet and hdnl.

how does your tax work out...I was interested in this sort of thing...but would have to fit it around my 2 other jobs...which employers deal with the tax. Would you have to be self employed for that job...and do u have to make any trips to the depot...and is it just in your home town u deliver to or have you delivered to a few towns.

Re the tax question. This job is self empoyed, but you can apply for a self assessment tax return, and then fill that in at the end of the tax year, showing your PAYE and your self employment figures. You have to register within 30 days with IR I believe.

I have a local accountant (she works from home too) and she does my tax return for about £70, which is well worth it. Keep all receipts, clothing (waterproof) and shoes, stationery etc. Also log your mileage daily. Take the car's mileage when you start the job (then the beginning of the tax year thereafter) and then again at the end of the tax year. You work out how many miles you did on business, and this is then taken as a percentage of the overall mileage. That percentage is then allowed against your tax, there is a method to work this out, but that's why I get my friendly accountant to do it, 'cos I'm a bit befuddled by it.:o I'm sure if you are willing to give it a go, it's all on the IR website.

Re the depot. If you live very close to one, then I think some couriers do go and pick up their parcels, but most get deliveries.

I only do my home town, larger towns and cities are split into areas. Rural rounds cover a number of villages.

    Hope that helps.

Good luck Pauline, you should get a call from the manager that covers your area.

Like I said, offering to do holiday/sickness cover and /or cataogue distribution is a good way in.

If you want any help anytime, just pm me.:)

Thanks for all the useful info. I've just applied for Parcelnet and will do the others too.

I'm pg with no. 2 and currently work 3 days a week but with 2 I don't want to have to pay all that childcare, plus I'm missing out on them. I need to earn money but want something to fit in. Luckily hubby is all for this and does not want me to go back to my day job and says he'll do some delivering too. I'm already registered as s/e with my Avon round so not bothered about that.

Fingers crossed I get something and it works out!
