What size of bottomless Pot should I use when planting tomatoes in a grow bag.

I have read that the Flower Buckets you get at supermarkets are ideal but cannot find any.

thanks.

someone else posted a pic of this, sorry I can't find it at the moment, but from what I can gather the pots are approx 9inches in diameter if that's any help.

I also found this web page which might be of interest to you .

  • Morrissons do the flower buckets, 99p for 8. Have grown an awful lot of stuff in them this year.

Before gardening got too fancy, tomatos used to be planted in 'rings' placed on a gravel bed. The 'rings' were made from something similar to roofing felt 9" deep and long enough to give 8 or 9" diameter. Once planted, the toms were only watered into the gravel to encourage the large water roots to travel. Only the feed was watered into the 'ring' where the finer feed roots existed.

Good method this as its difficult to overwater. Water is always drawn up into the ring so that doesnt dry out. Watering is fast to. Slosh it straight into the gravel bed. Gravel bed was usually on top of plastic liner with a few holes in it for a bit of drainage. This gravel bed ated to cool and humidify the greenhouse on a hot day too.

When the season has finished, riddle and clean thegravel witha wash and rinse in jeyes, and youre right for next season. Minimum cost spent on compost and its better than consuming bags of peat based every year. Ive grown toms like this for years and it worked for me as I used to travel alo especially into Europe so It had to cope with me being away from home.

I have managed to get loads this year too (first year for starting most things, have found the bug maybe) Everything has gone into one of these buckets this year, loads of veg, a few flowers and the like. If they work - GREAT. If they don't - not cost me a huge heap of cash.

i was just planing on using the biggest old pots i have and cutting out the bottoms - we were going to have a clear out anyway and get rid of our excess, so it seems to kill 2 birds with one stone.

Im also planning on doing this with two bottomless pots to a growbag. Not quite sure how to water them though. Do I need to cut seperate holes in growbag so I dont have to water from above?

Kantakarus Mare I put three bottomless pots for toms into a grow bag and sunk some empty 3" pots into the growbag between the toms ( 2 little pots per bag I think) and watered into the 3" pots so it went directly to the bottom roots and fed from above.
  • I bought builders buckets for 99p each last year from B&Q put holes in the bottom and had a good crop of tomatoes from them. Remember to splash water about when you water your toms as it keeps red mites away.
