Boiler help pls re SOGA!

Hi all,
We've had a problem with our boiler for a couple of months and 3 weeks ago it stopped working all together. We got a boiler guy (plumber?!) in and he serviced it, hoping it would fix it, but it didn't.
He said we needed a new gas valve which has just cost £270 for him to fit. He now tells us the boiler also needs a new circuit board and this will probably cost in the same region as the valve.
I have no issues about whether he's legit as he was recommended by my dad who also does his website so I can't believe he would try and diddle us!
The issue I have though is that we moved into our (brand new) apartment in July 2005 and so the boiler is only 2 years and 10 months old. Both summers we've lived in the flat the heating (but not the water) has been turned off so it's not like the boiler's ever had to work very hard! We have underfloor heating so even when the heating's been on, it's been working efficiently.
Surely this boiler is not fit for purpose and it certainly hasn't lasted as long as it should - to replace would cost us £2k which means for each year we've owned it, it'd cost us £660 to save up to keep replacing it!
Does anyone have any good knowledge of the SOGA and whether we'll be covered by it? I have no knowledge whatsoever so any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Sounds a reasonable argument and you can try it, but £2000 for a new boiler????, is this an oil boiler?,
a basic gas combi shouldn't cost that much at all, ring around for quotes expect nearer £1000, and if offered one google the model number to see how much it costs via the web
ps consider a maintenance planclick here to achieve nothing!0 -
I reckon you'll get better help if I move this over to the In My Home board
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. i also have a quote for 1800 for a new boiler and install some minor pipe work changes.
It was 1 or 3 quotes and this was the lowest one but with a good vaillant boiler and so sounded reasonable.
Is it?
We are currently boiler less so extensive research not an option.0 -
Hi
What is a Soga?

It's Sale Of Goods Act

Hi
:rotfl:Not a make of boiler then.
Has the boiler been serviced (before the last one when it broke down)
What is the make and model?

It was last serviced about 2 years ago - well, 22 months as it was about a year after we moved in. The guy serviced it before diagnosing which was £70.
The make and model is a Glow-worm 30cxi.
Thanks for your help

Hi
The Glowworm is not a bad boiler , it has it's faults like most . There has been some part modification such as the condensate trap and the ignition arrangement.
I think Glowworm would question why your Corgi changed the gas valve and then said it was the PCB. They might say it's not the boilers fault that he can't get the diagnosis right.
They may also ask for the Benchmark book and all the service details if you try to claim SOGA.
Try Glowworm and see if they could do a complete check on the boiler as it might be a problem with the system (such as a dirty system ,low gas supply pressure)
Good luck.

I moved this thread. I know that on this board there are few Corgi registered posters. I thought they may be able to give you better advice regarding your boiler rather than just consumer advice and SOGA.
I see that Canucklehead has done just that. (without a £50 callout charge....I love this site).
