I have a laptop and check their website every day and the local papers.
I have been told I am restricting myself to just wanting a job in Bury. I told them 'yes I know that, I am doing it for a reason, I have been travelling to manchester for 22 years in the car, and now i have got vol redundancy it allows me to work in Bury closer to home on a similar salary'.

They then looked at me as if to say 'oh right'

They seem to want you to travel everywhere within an hour and half of home. Why should i travel and lose out on money, if you live in a town you should be able to work there also.

They technically can restrict how much benefits you get if you refuse to search outside your area,

Also you are just looking for jobs that does not mean you have to apply for them, all the Job centre need to see is that you are interested and get the application forms from them to jobs outside your area, wither you actually fill in those applications is up to you! Their is no harm in that is there?
