Bank Reference - How long?!

Hi guys,
On average how long does it take for the banks to give a reference? We need one so we can move into our new place (renting) and we wanna move now! If i ring the bank and nag them, will that work?! Its been over a week already...
Any hints, tips, ideas please!

It can take from as little as days to at worst 3/4 weeks and that includes the person whose account it is chasing the bank direct.
Had two cases in the last two weeks, both from Barclays, and one reference was in within days and the other took two weeks. So no consistancy even with the same bank. If someone knows how to speed matters up I would like to hear from them.

Do banks charge for providing such a reference?
I presume you use a bank reference instead of the more usual employer or previous landlord references?
I could have trouble providing these myself so the bank option could be helpful0 -

I am not a LA but involved in commercial leases which involve tenants and references from bank which you woud pay for usually by completing a mandate for the bank to take money from your account -usually £10 inc Vat. We would then look for other references including current or past LL's, then people considered to be of good character. The LL must be shown the prospective tenant will pay the rent on time and will look after the property.A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. We didn't have to pay for our bank reference when we moved into our last place.
My mum had to provide hers as she was my guarantor, and I know she had to do alot of chasing to get it done. I can't remember how long it took exactly, but I know it was a good couple of weeks as we kept expecting to move in each weekend only to find out they hadn't had the reference yet.0
