A cry for help - any plumbers out there?

Hello guys/girls,

Does anyone what this problem could be:

Normal - Turn on the shower, makes a loud humming noise and water flows.

Now what happens is i turn the shower on, the humming noise stays on and no water comes out?

Is this a problem with the motor or pump?

Plumbers this way are charging £90+ per hour - is it worth me having it repaired or should i buy a new shower?

If i bought a new shower, would the fitting charge me inclusive or would i need to get a plumber and still pay the £90ish charge?

Just looking for the cheapest way to get scrubbed up please.

Thank you

Do you know what sort of shower it is (i.e is it an electric one that heats the cold water)

Fitting will almost definitely cost extra (or be included in an inflated "materials" price)

Also, if the shower is electric and needs replacing, I think the plumber will need to be Part P Registered

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

    Hey mate,

Thank you for replying to my shower mess.

Yes the shower is an elevtric shower. When you turn the knob, it moves from blue to red.

Cold comes out instantly and then when you turn to red it usually takes it time to kick into - you can here it kinda humming and thrusting out in bursts - it knows it's been turned to red and is trying to push through the hot water through.

I think its the motor thats gone but i cant be sure.

I am told that i would need a Part P plumber as you said.

The shower is about 15 years old.

Do you think it would be wise for me have the unit repaired or should i buy a new one?

Do you recommend i go with electrical or powershower?

And finally do you suggest i buy the shower and negotiate the fitting fee with the retailer or should i buy the unit and then appoint a plumber to fit seperately?

I cant really afford to pay steep prices like £90 per hour.

I would be grateful if you could help me with some good moneysaving advice?

    Thank you.

This was MP's reply to my last questions:

Well, "power" showers generally don't heat the water - they take the water from the hot cylinder or combi-boiler, so it still isn't clear if it is a power shower (which, yes, will need an electrical supply for the pump) or an plain electrical shower that heats its own water...

As to fixing it or not, I can't really say - it could be something simple that costs £5 for a part and £90 to fit or it could be totally chips anyway.

Always better to post on the thread so others can offer their opinions - feel free to copy this on the thread.

Retailers (unless you're talking a very small family business) generally won't do the fitting, but can probably give you the details of a suitable tradesman.

    Anyone other suggestions please guys?
