  • Hi,

wouldn't bother buying them, any factories or garages near you, they get deliveries in boxes, then usually flatten them and dump them.

Have you tried asking on freecycle? I saw some offered on my newsletter about a week ago.

Try Freecycle - often there are people who have just moved who are happy to pass them on. Boxes that you can scrounge from businesses I have found to be generally too big, especially for books where anything over a foot cube gets very heavy.

Edit: buyitall beat me to it!
  • Hi,

if you are looking for smaller boxes, try your local pub, spirit boxes are a good size for books and wee bits and pieces, again, they are usually folded down and binned, ask them to save you some, but collect them regularly to get them out of their way.

We generally visit a big supermarket and help ourselves to banana boxes. They're ideal for books and heavy items.

your local corner shop, or better still supermarket. My local Waitrose once had a 'box corner'
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

TBH I think many of those cardboard boxes you get from shops etc arent all that good, they hold little weight and are flimsy

I did get some from freecycle and the were crisps/cereal boxes. I ended up hardly using them as you couldn't get a lot in as they were flimsy

I got my boxes in the end from the removal company, it was a auction/removal company, I also got bubble wrap a large roll. I had to pay from the bubble wrap but the boxes were free as they were moving us

Just a thought but couldn't you ask one locally. I know we try and save money but I think sometimes it worth getting something decent like proper packing boxes

Lidl's near here (Trowbridge) have them on offer from Thursday as one of their short run specials - in other words if you want them get in quick as once they've gone that's it. Can't remember all the prices but they had standard boxes, book boxes and wardrobe boxes.

  • There are loads of websites that offer packages of boxes (including packing tape, bubblewrap, acid free paper, etc). I think I paid about £30 for a small package (I shared a 3 bed flat with my brother but did have extensive DVD, computer and kitchen stuff collections). Afraid I can't remeber the site but if you type "cardboard boxes" or "removal boxes" into google you'll get loads of responses. Open 4 websites and check the prices. All the ones I looked at delivered the next day and as far as I was concerned £30 (when compared to the cost of moving house) was fairly cheap.

Alternatively, doesn't your removal co. provide boxes and packing materials? They usually do and will often drop it off on a days notice. Just thought - you may not be using a removal co.

For a cheaper option, just try your local high street shops. As people have mentioned above, they will normally have lots of deliveries and will simply flatten boxes to be taken away. I would be tempted to pop into 4 or five shops on the high street and ask if they have any boxes they would like you to take off their hands. That's what I used to do at university.
