We have looked at GSHP alternatives however we are on chalk and installation would require a lot of chalk to be removed and replaced by sand. That along with other factors has taken heat pumps off the list of possibilities.

We have however looked at the Thermal Store idea and the possibility of connecting it to our woodburning stove and perhaps solar as well as a Oil or LPG. It seems like a good idea?!

Then look at air source heat pumps, not quite as good as ground source, but significantly cheaper than oil/lpg/standard electric and can be cheaper than gas in the summer!

I would be greatful for any help. Mains Gas, Solar, HeatPumps e.t.c. are unfortunately not an option.

Why is solar and ground or air source heat pumps not an option?

    Hi

Need to update the system and would be grateful if anyone has any facts regarding the energy (kW) e.t.c. to heat a litre of water and to heat a
m³ of space in the house? From this I hope to calculate the cost fo using LPG, Oil or Off Peak Electrcity.

The amount of energy needed to heat a space is not the important factor, it is calculating the losses from the building that decides the energy required.

You need to calculate the cost of producing a kWh of heat from oil, lpg, electricity etc.

That is relatively simple if you know the price of the fuel and the efficiency of the oil/lpg boiler.

However at current prices off-peak electricity is by a long way cheaper than oil or lpg.
The main factors to consider are the extra you will pay for the rest of your 'daytime' electricity and if the inconvienience of storage heating can be tolerated.

Why does every one here talk about the cost of gas, Lpg and electricity? Are you mad? The clues in the name, moneysavingexpert.

Use coal. Sorry... cardew have you done your math? I pay 2.8p a Kw/h in caol with 80% effiviency

I heat my 18 rad house on it. 'cos lpg is not viable. Dowling stove witha Dunsley. LPG from extrafuel summer only for cooking.

Coal slaughters LPG and Oil ,and betters mains gas slightly. Only it costs a lot to install well.

    See:

    coedcymru calcualtor page.

    I pay 2.20 a 10kg bag for smokless.
