Agreed, but if you could opt out of VAT until you actually hit the 64K threshhold, would that not help a little bit?

My turnover is far more than 64k.

So how much did the BBC give you towards your deposit to go on there :)

    Nothing. I didn't get paid.

A lot of what I said was edited out and bits joined together. When you see me talking in my house it looks like a straight run, it wasn't. They filmed that bit a few times and then joined it together.

It looks like they just knocked on my door and asked a couple of questions. In reality they spent a fair amount of time talking to me on the phone and by email beforehand. Then it took nearly all day to film.

To give you an idea of why it's difficult to save, my rent is 1/3rd of my income. Bills and council tax take another chunk. Three kids are hugely expensive, for example they need new shoes every couple of months as they grow out of them. Shoes for kids are no cheaper than adults. Times that by three and you get the idea. On top of that we have to pay for the bus fare to school as the council don't pay it. Then food bills are massive for a family of 5. So I'm actually left with very little disposable income.

Perhaps it came across that I live in my house rent free or have a nice cheap council rent. That isn't the case at all. Maybe you noticed one of the cars on my drive is 17 years old, and my business car is 3 years old. I don't exactly live the high life!

I can imagine how expensive it is to live - everyone is in the same position.

Is renting for another 12 months out of the question?

I seen on the program you said "yeppie we have 175k we can buy a nice big house" Im not sure what area you live in and not sure what sort of property your looking for. But means you have 3 children you will need at least 3 bed property. If you NEED to move out why not downgrade what property you want, to what property you can afford?!?!? if your that desperate to get on the property ladder?

I'm no expert and dont know your situation 100% but my advice would be to carry on renting for another 6 months, try and save as much as you can for the deposit. You never know that property that was 175k could be going for 150k in 6-12 months time.....

Do you employ an accountant, accepting that the programme was heavily edited, it does look like you would benefit from one.

Then see a mortgage broker and work out what mortgage you could afford and what property you could buy for that money.

Ideally you want to be ready to buy the minute it looks like the market may be at its lowest point.
