cost of fuel when idling with air con on

I know in Inverness busses can get fined for being sat idiling for more than 5 minutes, quite right too. Just because you don't pay for something directly doesn't mean you should waste it.
I am not wasting it, I am using it to keep my air con running so I can eat my lunch in comfort...I dont need lecturing.
What is the offence? that allows buses to be fined and who by?
I didnt start this thread to argue the toss over the "green" issues. It was a straightforward question. I guess if we delved deeper there would be things we all had to hide...even all the "dogooders" on the planet0 -
Even with the aircon switch in the ON possition the clutch on the drive wheel for the pump cuts in and out to regulate the temperature and pressure of the system so even though its ON your not always using the 'extra' fuel.'Beware of little expenses. Photome - you did manage to get some good replies there - as to the pc brigade, I'd not take any notice.
I'm sick of the 'green' blackmail that we are all under at the moment and being taxed to the hilt.

I think they should review more 4x4's:D
But I don't think Jeremy likes them much:o
I'm not into cars really, but I do like Top Gear, as I find the dynamics & banter between the three of them funny & entertaining.0 -
I dont understand how it can be doing the engine any harm at tick over speed. Bus engines rarely get over tick over speed all day (they are governed) and some diesel generators will run all day at very low revs. Diesels as far as I am aware will go on for ever at any revs so long as they are at operating temperature
Could you tell me the damage it may cause.
I must add it is a company car and i dont pay for the fuel. It has done nearly 100000 and never had a problem so cant be doing to much damage
your right, diesel engines actually operate best at low revs, this is what they were desgined for....work permit granted!0 -
Id like to see this challenged in court. My bet is it wouldn't get past the front door.
I cant see a copper walking down a 10 mile tail back on the M25 just to fine every one who is stationary with the engine running.'Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship'. -Benjamin Franklin.0 -

Jeremy likes anything with a V12 engine - and Photome, I reckon he would happily sit with the air con on - and not worry. I think the amount of extra fuel you use is not that big a deal in the scheme of things, if you can afford it and it makes your lunch hour more comfortable, its gotta be worth it.
And where was Top Gear dog last series???Genie

I didn't know they had a dog.
Unless you're being rude about James May:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
He looks like a shaggy old hound:D0 -
It's not a good idea to have the engine running in a stationary car for 40 minutes per day. Not good for engine wear.
I'll look round on google, there must be some data on the fuel consumption rate of an engine that's idling.Happy chappy0
