HiSave duplicate deposit transfer & penalty

Options
I opened a ICICI HiSave saving account a few months ago and recently made a £6000 deposit into that account from my current account by placing the request from the HiSave online banking facility. This took about 5 days to complete.

Apparently i've now been charged £25 by my bank (where I hold my current account) for not having enough funds to cover a direct debit. After looking at my current account using online banking it seems that there were two requests made from my HiSave account for the same £6000 amount on the same day. I certainly only submitted one transfer request but it seems to have duplicated for some reason.

My current account only transferred one single £6000 transaction but the statement also displays the failed attempt for the second £6000 transaction + the £25 insufficient funds fee.

The HiSave account now shows that I have £12000 in that account with both £6000 deposits appearing on the statement.

What am I to do here? I'd like to contest the £25 charge as there seems to have been a technical issue at some point causing the duplicate transaction, but since there has been a 'ghost' deposit into my account and it's obvious that the money isn't mine, i'm questioning what my next step should be. If they have made a mistake and don't realise for some time is there such a law saying that it would be legally mine after that period of time?

I know some may consider this as attempted theft but the banks make too much money as it is and it would be good to find out if there are laws covering admin failures such as these where customers can benefit from.

Thanks

Pete

its likely the savings account will correct - suggest you contact your bank and tell them you want you fee returned under the direct debit guarantee, and complain to ICICI about the error

I have had similar problems with ICICI direct debits failing. One of the £6000 transfers into your HiSave account will almost certainly be shown as reversed in a few days. It is probably not the fault of your current account provider so I doubt they will refund the fee. HiSave direct debits for me were very hit and miss, the last one being made well after I asked for my HiSave account to be closed!

fault is irrelevant - if a DD doesnt work properly the bank the money comes from has to correct it

I am just writing to say that I have had a similar problem with the exact same amount in the last month.
ICICI have washed their hands off saying it is not their fault and I had requested the duplicate transfer. Customer service is pathetic to put it mildly.
Linked current account bank says it is not their mistake & have charged me £25 as charges.
Wanted to know if you have managed to find any way of recovering these charges & if you could complain to a regulatory body(financial ombudsman).

Go to your bank, complain about this error and ask them to return the fee.

On the 1st July I arranged for a £2500 transfer from my linked account to Hisave using ONETIME only and on the 4th July my bank was debitted £2500 and on the 5th July my bank was debitted £2500. ICICI were told on the 5th July and are investigating, I was promised an answer 15 minutes ago so will now ring them !:A:money:

Well by 16:00hrs on the 9th July my problem should be resolved, once they have determined the problem, and I`ve had a verbal confirmation that if it`s their (ICICI) problem they will refund me £25 I`ve been charged by my bank. My god it`s hard work talking to an Indian Call Centre Worker and explaining all of this !:T:A

Had this message yesterday but again this morning everyones money is stuck in ICICI for essential maintenance. I wonder how many people have had a problem and don`t read this forum. Decided that once my term deposits are paid out I`m moving all my money out of this bank as the customer service is rubbish and so slow !:T:A
