I didn't read any 'picking at' in margeretclare's post, it seemed unemotive, informative and factually correct to me.

We all read things differently, that is the beauty/ problem of the written word! ;)

That excuse always makes me laugh.

Me too, it's like when people say 'I'm not being racist or anything' directly before making a racist remark.

Yep, there are Islamic mortgages designed to get around 'usury' by a contrivance of the bank owning the home and charging 'rent' while the capital is paid off.

It's actually pension arrangements which favour Muslims, again to avoid then getting all offended by someone profiting from charging interest. The islamic pension means that on the death of the holder, the dependants don't lose the annuity and it become part of the estate.
That's the thing about equality legislation, anyone should be able to get this.

I don't think anyone should be picking at LillyJ for using incorrect terminology (and using racism to refer to religion as opposed to country of origin is a very common mistake). It does not change the fact that the OP made a blatantly bigoted comment.

Have I missed something here? I see no bigoted post by the OP. Everything has been pretty level so far IMO.
    Has it been deleted?

It has been deleted thankfully, as have my posts in which I quoted the comments.

Lets just say they were pretty digraceful.

Usary laws in the UK prevented Christians from lending money and charging interest but allowed Jews to do so. Also, money lending was a job that Jews could do when many other avenues of making money were closed to them after Cromwell allowed the to re-enter England officially after they'd been kicked out in the C13th.

I guess usary, like dietary laws and stoning adulterers was one of those inconvenient sins that have been ignored down the years.

Do you have to be a Muslim to get a Islamic mortgage ? do they check.

I disagree with paying or charging interest so I would like this kind of mortgage.

The mortgages are open to anyone. However, earlier posts will demonstrate that it is not as simple as not paying any interest, and it may not be the best value option!

It wasn't *after* Cromwell let the Jews back into England.

Money-lending was about all medieval Jews could do. IIRC, they weren't allowed in many trades, and couldn't own land.

The King, I think, "owned" all the Jews. So he could forgive debts owed to Jewish moneylenders, and did so as a cheap way of garnering favour. It was easy not to pay back, so interest rates tended to be pretty high. And that led to Jews being seen as greedy.
