a bit late for some on here, but this is another reason to use john lewis for expensive electrical items.
5 yr warranty is standard.Get some gorm.0 -
If you are eligible to join Costco they also do a 5 year warranty on televisions, I bought one recently for another room. For any electrical item I now look at the John Lewis website, they are very competitive, bought my fridge/freezer and washing machine from them.0

We used to buy parts from Erae in Korea. Last November we placed an order, paid full amount (around £4k) in advance.... the parts never arrived & no contact since

Just an update really with regards to my broken Erae TV from Curry's.
I got a local TV man to look at TV. he was unable to get any manuals / parts and & he reported that it was dead and not cost effective to fix. I sent a copy of this report to Currys customer services. They phoned me and initally offered my 'about £300'. I said that I would think about it and get back to them.
After speaking with 'Consumer Direct' (Really fantastic free government service advising on consumer rights) who suggested that an offer in the region of £600 - £650 would be reasonable. I spoke again with Curry's who offered me £535, after speaking to senior staff this amount was not increased upon. Consumer Direct said that I could go to my credit card provider and request reasonable compensation. I rang Curry's again and informed them of this and Curry's said that the offer of £535 would stand, for me to try with my Credit Card and if that doesn't work out I can still claim off Curry's. Curry's then sent me a check for the cost of the TV repair man report.
At the moment I am awaiting my credit card provider to respond to my request for reasonable compensation.......watch this space.0 -
Prestonello, that's great news that Currys are coming forward with an offer. Keep us updated with how you get on with your credit card provider.
My tv is still working ok (fingers crossed) since Sept 08. I thought it had broken again last week but I had dislodged the power cable whilst dusting!
If it goes again I will follow the same route as you and ask for compensation then buy another tv from Costco/John Lewis. I do not think it is unreasonable to expect a tv to last at least 5 years, and if they have sold it to us and made the profits Currys have a responsibility to act if the manufacturers parts are not available so soon after purchase.
I am no longer a Currys customer, will not go in there now on principle.0 -
i bought an 40inch erae tv in 2005 which i payed £1,299, within 2 years it started to turn its self off, i called currys!! they kept passing me to different departments for about 2 weeks, eventually they said they would get sumone to call out and it wood cost me £180 which had to paid b4 they engineer could come to my house, wen the engineer called at ma home he said that the part they needed would have to b ordered in and would probably take 2 weeks,
2 weeks later i called currys to see if they parts had been delivered and i got told that they couldnt order the parts as the erae tv was made up with all different makes of parts and the part that was needed was no longer available anywhere!!
i tried numerous tv repair men who said they had never heard of that make b4 but they would try and find out if they could obtain parts for it, but to no avail,
Now i am £1299 out of pocket, and left with tv that dosnt work,
I WILL NEVER SHOP FROM CURRYS AGAIN.:mad:0 -
Hi jeanjeanie33
Have you tried contacting Consumer Direct for advice?
There seems to definitely be a common theme of Erae tv's breaking down after a couple of years and owners not being able to obtain the parts. It is interesting to see what Currys themselves say - they admit they cannot get parts for a tv they sold relatively recently.
Did you get the £180 back from Currys because they could not repair the tv?0 -
Well this will be interesting, after going through some old paperwork I find that my late husband actually took a three year 'whateverhappens' service agreement out on the TV. Even though we actually stopped such silly expenditure years ago.
So after months of the TV turning itself off after three or four hours we'll see if they can fix it....
Will update as and when.DC.

Hi I bought 40in erae tv two years ago second hand it stated to switch of after about 6 or 7 hours then it would go of every half hour or so .Since then we had a tv engineer have a look at it he strip out the power board could not find anything wrong with it, After replaceing the board he left back of the tv (not recomended if you have small children in the home) It is now not switching of it seems like it is an over heating problem and cant get the parts for this make of tv unless you stay in korea ps. back is still of and still going strong.0
