Erae LCD tv - part needed

Options
Hello

I have an Erae LCD tv and the picture has gone on it. When turned on the screen is just dark blue, sound is ok.

I got a tv repairman to look at it and he knows what part it needs - however he cannot source the part. We got the tv from Currys in March 2006 so I am not impressed that it is packing up already, and worse still cannot get the parts.

I phoned Currys yesterday and they said that they do not sell the tv anymore and do not know where i can get a part from. I have been given a number for a service centre to try there.

Do any moneysavers out there know where i could get a part for an Erae tv?

Also, legally can a store sell tv's that you cannot get a part for after only 2 years?

Thanks

    Hi
    Update to my posted question.

TV came back this morning. I telephoned various 0844 Currys numbers on Sat to see if I could get a part, was told to phone the service centre in Preston today. A lady there advised that she did not know if Erae parts could be obtained. I asked where an engineer/service centre obtained the parts, was told an engineer would have to come out and advise where I could get parts from at a cost of £180!!!!! Yes.........£180.

I telephoned Consumer Direct and a lady there told me that Currys were responsible under the Sale of Goods Act to repair or replace my tv. She advised me to contact Currys and tell them this. They should then try to repair or if not then replace. There should be no cost to myself, the replacement would be like for like and as the consumer I am not liaible for any costs. There may be a charge for the engineer to look at my tv but that would be refunded. Also, because I purchased the tv with a credit card it is covered under the Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. However, the lady advised me try Currys first, it should be quite straightforward.....................

    1. Phone Currys on a 0844 number, and then another 0844 number.
    2. Get redirected to another 0844 number.
    3. Look on SAYNOTO0870 and get a freephone number for Customer (lack of) Support. They redirect me to another 0844 number and told to select option 5.
    4. Phone 0844 5611234 and select option 5. There I am told that they need a report to say the part cannot be obtained/the tv cannot be repaired. Am told to contact the tv 'helpline' and an engineer would have to come out and write a report that I would have to then post back to Currys with a covering letter. So, a Currys engineer would come out, give me a piece of paper, I would then have to send that back to Currys............. discuss! At this point I did start to get angry, why have I got to post a report back to the same company, why can't it be done electronically.
    5. Phone the tv Helpline no. 0844 800 3060 and explained that I need an engineer to come out and do a report on the tv. They cannot authorise an engineer to come out as the tv is out of guarentee. Advised to phone 0844 5611234...........and select option 5.............bit of deja vu here. At this point I spontaneously combusted. I just said I was going to call Trading Standards again.
6 Phoned Consumer Direct. They are putting the case over to Trading Standards I explained that they would not do anything without a report. Consumber Direct just said that I should not be doing all this and Trading Standards would contact me later in the week to arrange a report to be done by an engineer both parties are happy with.

The thing that really got to me was, and I am capable of sticking up for myself, by the end of the cycle of phoning various Currys numbers I was near to tears with frustration and anger. Why could one person not sort out my problem, why was a passed from pillar to post. How do other more vulnerable people go one, do they just give up and buy another tv? This is a company making millions every year. Disgraceful!!!!!!!

So, lesson learned. I will not be going back to Currys again for anything.
  • Hi

I also have an Erae LCD tv (since May 2006, Currys) and only just today has the display given up. I have sound but no picture - only a faint backlighting and can't see volume display controls etc.

If this is the same fault as you have encountered, could you possibly advise me of the required part. I will search high and low and keep you informed of progress.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Hi Mikey

Sounds like the same fault - have you tried to get it fixed or contacted Currys? I would be interested to hear of your experiences. If you have had trouble contact your Trading Standards dept. The regional TS officer in this region, for dealing with Currys, is in Liverpool and it may be worth highlighting.

The latest is my local trading standards have been involved and she has got the regional trading stadards officer for dealing with Currys involved. Currys contacted me, because of TS contacted them, and said they would take it away for inspection and repair by a Currys engineer for £179.99 + cost of parts. I asked if they could tell me where to get the parts from and the lady that phoned me said I would be better going through Currys as the parts are 'tricky' to get hold of. I told the TS officer that I felt they had a monopoly on repairing Erae tv's. Currys also advised that it would be up to me to try and claim money back direct from the manufacturer - as you all know the contract is with the retailer not the manufacturer. I could not find my receipt but when TS got in touch with Currys they had my purchase record anyway.

Latest is - I got an independent engineers report (£25) and sent it with a covering letter to Customer Services, Currys, The Parkway, Sheffield, S2 5YA.

The letter was received by Currys on 25/6/08 and to date I have heard nothing. I am going to contact TS and see if they can chase it up.

Sorry for the delay in responding.
  • Hi,
Has anyone found out what the problem is? my picture has vanished as well!
  • www.myerae.com, all in korean though. currys do not have to do anything unless you can prove the tv was faulty at time of purchse, which is pretty difficult to do, trading standards will initially be on your side obviously, but if it got further ultimately unless you can prove the defect from day 1 there is not really a case. the burden of proof for any faults lies solely with the consumer once an item is 6 months old.
  • Does anyone know if they can be repaired or is it time for the bin?
  • Mine is two years old and it just switches itself off after a couple of hours, just started this week.
Quite scared that it's over heating.

  • After sending the letter to Currys I heard nothing for 4 weeks so chased up with the TS. A week or so later Currys contacted me to say the Tech Guys will be getting in touch regarding picking my tv up free of charge. It was picked up on 18/8 and returned 8/9. I have not had chance to try it yet.

Once I have tried it I will update the TS people and then write to Currys to ask what happens if it breaks again.

The whole point of my complaint was around where to get parts for this make, if I had been able to get the tv repaired in the first place I would not have needed to contact Currys. I kept the complaint up as I was not about to bin a tv that cost £1299 just over 2 years previously, and from which Currys had made a profit. It was a point of principle.

I did also contact the Apro number but kept getting a message "we are not here now" so did not leave any details as I could not be sure it was them. I also tried emailing Erae but the email address came back as undeliverable.

Has anyone tried to get their tv repaired or contacted Currys?
  • This is my first post so here goes...
    Hello,
I too have a Erae 40 inch LCD bought from Curry's in July 2006 on credit card. Yesterday the picture blanked but sound continued. I too can't see volume display /controls etc.

Before I contact Curry's I have been trying to find out if I can get a replacement rather than a repair.

Rottielover it appears that you have had a hard time taking this forward. Any more hints /tips?
If this has happened to anyone else I would be eager to find out how you sorted it!
    Cheers
  • Hi prestonello & all

TV is working ok and is being used again!

This does seem to be a common problem with two year old Erae tv's. I wonder how many more there are whose owners do not use this forum. The one hint/tip I can offer is be persistant!

Once I found I could not get the tv repaired, and seemed to hit a brick wall with Currys, I contacted Consumer Direct. The number given to me by my council is freephone 0808 1561044 (the number on their website is 0845....). You now have to go through Consumer Direct and not straight to TS as previously.

Consumer Direct then put me in touch with my local TS dept, the lady there has been very good and when we struggled with Currys she put my case forward to the regional TS person who deals with Currys.

Like I said - I tried to get the tv repaired but could not and my argument was on that basis. Has anyone contacted a tv repairer and asked if they can repair Erae tvs?

Prestonello - who have you contacted to see if you can get a replacement?
