Have you any idea why the icon at the bottom of my screen says the virus data base is out of date?

Assuming that the virus database isn't out of date, I think this might happen if the system time is incorrect. Check the clock at the bottom-right of your screen. If the time is correct, hover over the clock to check that the date is correct too.

If necessary you can double-click on the clock to set the time/date correctly.

    Hope this helps...

It's AVG AntiSpyware and AntiRootkit that are no longer free. They are now integrated bundles in the commerical edition. AVG still has a free edition AV.

I have the free AVG 8.0, and its got the anti-spyware built in. Hate the new link scanner though-disabled it almost straight away.
Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.

That's your free alternative? Spend hundreds of quid on a completely new computer and replacement software?

It's funny that you should mention the clock as, when this computer was delivered and set up, the clock was wrong and the instructions for putting it right were so long winded I decided not to bother. Then, strangely, the clock just came right. Also, another funny thing I have just discovered, hovering over the time no longer tells me the date. It did up to a short time ago?? But, I am inclined to agree that the anti- virus data base is NOT out of date. Thank you anyway.

    Use Avast 4.8 - http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html or Anti-Vir - http://www.free-av.com/ as alternatives.

Much better than AVG in my opinion.

Could you give more information about why you think they're better please? I'm looking to change from AVG since upgrading to version 8 trashed my kernel. (Not pleased about all the re-installation I'm having to do, either!)

avast is very good since it works and picks up most infections .. i suggest occassionally run another anti virus product such as bitdefender/or one of the above (also free) just in case avast is missing detections but exit from avast since 2 antivirus programmes dont work effectively together.

webroots spysweeper is very good if you can find a trial version to occassionally look for malware/anti virus/etc

First question, which version of AVG do you have? Double click on the AVG icon in the tray and then Information, About.
