If you're just after a base unit, not sure about a new Dell or the Ebay adventure,
have a look at Europc.co.uk. Warranted 2nd user named systems. Don't hold your
breath for a knockout bargain though.

I've bought off Ebay, Dell and Europc. No real problems off any.
Make sure you do a comprehensive check of the Ebay seller's feedback. Make sure he's built a substantial amount of pcs before & customers are happy.

    Good advice. Thanks.
  • buying Dell = good advise? eek!

Id stick to a local non-brand company - you will get the most bang for ya bucks this way. As said above just go for the low end setup. You will need to ensure a DVD writer and a big hard disk if you are interested in media but tbh you can pick up the former for £30 and all modern PCs come with enormous drives these days. Even a dirt cheap one should have around 100gb which is more than a casual user will prob need atm...

Tescos were selling great all in bundles in that price range, tbh unless you are a specialist PC user the basic package will see you happy no probs.

Oh, and Dell, tend to be a bit pricey relative and also often use propietry components that you cant upgrade, or can only upgrade with expensive Dell own brand parts - you have been warned!

Nah, you can get a good Dell deal. They're not expensive... but yes, dearer than a non brand... you get what you pay for. Upgrading a Dell's not a problem. My bro recently upgraded his Dell Dimension with a new cpu etc. I asked Dell about a little upgrade of my ram - they said it was ok to use another brand, of course they tried to push their product, it's their job to do so.

I've only had a problem upgrading an ex b/f's PC and that was a TIME machine. No comment.

Dont know if anyone has said anything bad about this site but they are really good ive got my pc's from here thinking of getting a new one aswell.

Personally i feel dell are crap...BUT, for a system this guy is looking for, which isn't too media/gaming heavy, he might find dell a better package as it comes with things like free printer etc depending on what he requires. But i wouldn't buy a dell for gaming or media heavy stuff...maybe a dell xps loll

lol true to say that you'd do well with a console lol, but i find them obsolete in the fps genre, now that i've played PC Games. I was playing Doom 3 on the Xbox but i enjoyed the PC version alot better. I think im so used to the Pc for fps that, when i tried to play Hitman Contracts on my ps2, and in training you have to use your guns to aim at targets, i was useless at it! I would've had to spend an hour or so trying to get back that joypad feeling and get my aiming up to scratch but FarCry was calling my name so i left it and havn't touched it since.

Might get it on PC loll

I still have my Amiga 1000 lol. There's an old Atari and a Sinclair in the loft. lol. Never treated myself to a true games console and too tight to buy a gaming PC. lol.
