This card reader nonsense is a complete nuisance. I've resorted to getting a telephone banking pass number so that I can make payments. So much for the internet revolution.

I'd avoided using it so far because of the hassle of changing my details at zillions of sites.
This only affects debit card details (16 digit references) of course - the account number is the same.
.....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam
  • Yep same here. This card reader is making the once straightforward business of paying credit cards and other people too awkward to bother with. It's actually no harder to send a cheque!

It looked like a sensible idea, to implement extra security for new payments, however its astonishing that I have to use the card reader to pay my recurring monthly Visa bill.
The current overhead to log in and carry out this simple transaction is now 48 keystrokes.
I did complain to Nationwide about it, and they simply pointed me to the faqs page.
    Poor.

Luckily I have a cashcard account as well as my visa account, so I just make all external transactions on the cashcard account which doesn't use the card reader, annoying but necessary.

Oh, and my card reader stopped working yesterday when I dropped it on a carpet floor, wonder how long they take to send out another!

    Cheers, Des.

The problem with this type of implementation is, it has the right intentions but completely fails due to it's innoperatibility. Far too awkward and inconvenient, it actually makes the process of internet banking (which is supposed to be a revolution in convenience) a complete pain in the A-hole to use.

I'm actually going to be moving to another bank because of it.

You'll have trouble finding a bank now who doesn't use a similar system, HSBC has migrated with the secure key. I think the whole set of RBS banks are going to introduce it in the near future, I don't even think there's a single bank left.
