Broadband difficulties - PLEASE Help me!!!!

Last year, around October, I signed up to AOL Broadband as they )and the BT website) said that my line was ready for DSL upgrade. So, signed up, Broadband pack received and installed solftware etc, however I could never get the DSL light to stay on constantly, it just flashed on and off.
After approx 20 hours on phone to AOL helpline, still no success in fixing this problem (I believed that the DSL was not tuned in right, and a BT engineer would need to come out to my house and fix this), however nothing was done.
As you can imagine, I was ready to bang my head off a wall, instead, I just gave up, and stuck to the dial-up (meanwhile paying the extra pound or two a month to AOL for broadband).
A few months after, I decided to give it another try, but on phoning up, they said they had lost all the details I had given them so far - back to square one, so I didn't bother persuing it any more!
So my 12 month "contract" is nearly up. What do you guys suggest doing? I had thought I could sign up for BT Broadband, with the thought that they would have to send their own guys/engineers out to fix any problem? However they have bandwidth limits, and I was with them years ago as dial-up BT internet, and they weren't great.
Any advise would be great,
Steven

I would suggest then that you read the threads on this board and make a decision about a new provider. If you get a modem through them or search for the cheapest one, you can then test whether that was the problem. (As you have to start afresh anyway because AOL had "lost all your details".
You probably have to give a month's notice to AOL too before you stop paying and I would make sure your bank knows not to make any more payments to them. (Virgin kept taking my money for 3 months after the contract had ended! I did get it reimbursed... eventually.)Torgwen..........
