Is it worth complaining? Or at least letting them know? (HMV student discount)

Options
This has been posted about on the student board, but you guys know more about this kind of thing so thought Id get your opinion...

I buy most of my CD's and games from HMV and over the past year have probably been in there about 20 times or so. Latest time (before today) was 2 weeks ago. Each time I have used my NUS extra card to receive 10% discount. Happy days.

Today though I was informed I needed one of their student cards to get the discount. No worries, I thought. Zavvi have the same policy. So I asked for a card. To which I got:

"Sorry we dont hand them out this late in the year, weve been giving them to every student since September." I explained to the sales assistant that this isnt true as I have never been told about this card, and never had my NUS card refused or queried.

Sales assistant didnt care (not expecting him to as its not really his job) and so I got no discount. He explained that the new cards would come in during September so I could get one then. Well this is my last year of uni so I wont be able to get one.

After this I went to my lecture and asked the guys on my course. Not a single one has ever been informed of this new card and they all have bought from HMV in the last month or 2.

So if theyve been telling everyone, but managed to miss the 30 of us then surely they are doing somthing wrong?

Overall it doesnt bother me too much as Ill just go to Zavvi, but its the fact that they obviously havent been telling people. Meaning that all these students miss out on the discount their apparently entitled to.

So yeh, Im not after anything (obviously) but I feel like this should be brought to attention by the head office? As our store hasnt been telling people!

What do you think?

I'd just concentrate on your studies. Then you'll be able to get a job where you won't need any discount to be able to afford to buy whatever you want! x

In Nottingham they were giving them out well before Christmas, so maybe they have genuinely given out their quota?

    PS they are = they're
    Gone ... or have I?

I'd go back and bring it up to one of the supervisors, it's obviously a training issue that could probably be handled with a quick couple of minutes aside.

Just buy MP3's of internet that will put HMV out of business. Or buy the CD over intertnet.

Maybe my comment wont help but I'm sure any cd from HMV you want you would be able to get off the net cheaper including postage. What I do is have the veoh player installed and just download the videos onto that its free only downside is you dont get a cd. BUT its free.

Have to agree with others, very rare HMV (IMHO) come close on price even with the discount.

Although I did have a similar problem a couple of years ago buying some stuff in the sale, handed over my student card and was told I had to have a seperate HMV student card and they "couldn't just give them out to students - you have to apply for one" (?) Anyway, left the stuff at the till and walked away. As it turned out, what ever I was buying I found cheaper a week after the sales period finished.

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

I agree, HMV rarely works out cheaper. But it is normally a similar price for Wii games (ok I know the net is normally cheaper, but there are times when I dont want to wait for delivery).

What annoyed me is that the store have not been telling people about this card, but insist they have? How could NO-ONE on my course know about this?

I understand that it is frustrating, but they don't have to give out any discounts, so whilst I agree with Hollydays that it might be worth e-mailing the head office, the chances are the best you an expect would be a couple of vouchers by way of an apology, but no guarantee that a simliar situation couldn't arise next year.

I think the thing people are missing a point here which is that you used to be able to use your NUS membership and more recently the £10 NUS Extra card to buy, with 10% discount, in HMV. Yes, you can just go online and buy it of course, but what if you wanted it there and then and you were in HMV - you could use the discount on sale items for example...

Anyway, it now appears that you must obtain a HMV student discount card and that HMV are no longer in partnership with the NUS Extra scheme [well I can't find any info on the NUS Extra website]...

There is this here link that explains about the HMV student card and how they don't have any more available now!

It seems to me like a bad move - students will go elsewhere, Zavvi who do seem to offer student discount with an NUS Extra card and Cd-Wow or Amazon who also allow student discount online... I'm not sure why they would alienate such a big demographic, it seems slightly bizarre to me.
