Because my gas is with British Gas, I was thinking of taking out their boiler cover. Am i roght in assuming that it's a safe bet? I dont fully understand the lingo, but would have thought they would be the best bet?0

From some of the posts on these boards NO!
Over priced for not enough cover from the stories told reguarly on here.
I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.:cool:0 -

And most of those posts are from cynics like you who "probably" haven't had any experience of them. Read my post No 27 above.0 -

Actually I based it on the number of OP's (and thread detractors) who have posted about the shocking service.
For every cynic there wil be number of people who (like yourself) have had steller service.
Unfortunately, for a company to get a "good reputation for a well priced service" the ratios need to be much better IMHO.

I suspect that, like most of these things, it is those that are unhappy that post and the 'silent majority' that are happy with their service.
I have recently left BG Homecare after many years with them. However like djohn2002uk I have had excellent service at all times from them(and, also like him, one of my boilers is a 20 year old Ideal.)
My reason for leaving is primarily cost. I have 2 systems and they wanted £472 last year(2007) for both of them. The costs have leapt up in recent years - in 2001 it was £229 so more than doubled in 6 years. Incidentally in 1990 - for a single system - the full works 3* system cost £64
I was also getting the 'parts are no longer available for your boiler' spiel and letters from the sales team.
I have 'found' a corgi plumber that I believe will be more cost effective; so I am taking the gamble!
So personally I have found BG to be excellent - just the the 'premium' for the insurance they provide makes it a poor proposition.0
