week 5 is a toughie :( particularly with all the sunshine we're getting at the moment! i'm having to slow right down and do each set over a week. i've done the 3 sets of 5 minute runs for the last 4 times and i had a crack at the 2 sets of 8 minute runs today. i managed to get up to 7 and a half mins on the first one but kept having to run/walk for the next set. i think it'll be at least another couple of weeks before i do the 20 minute run (gulp!!!).

i threw in some stomach crunches today as i was a bit miffed i didn't complete the run.

try not to get too worried about it. i've decided to stick at each stage of week 5 for a few runs till i get confident. if it gets too much i'll slow to a brisk walk for 10 or 20 seconds and then try again. i think ultimately it's better to do it at your own pace rather than risking injury or burning out.

i went to see my doctor today about my knees as he runs. he told me a nationwide chain called 'up and running' have podiatrists instore sometimes who'll put you on a running machine and advise you about equipment and techniques.

apparantly good (ie - expensive!) running shoes have a solid instep that helps your feet stay in a straight line. i have collapsed arches which seems to be the root of all my joint pains. which means i have to fork out for yet another pair of shoes now... great!!

i got my cheapo running shoes from decathlon, they were a tenner and seem to be taking the beating my feet give to all my shoes pretty well! i think they do top range stuff as well so it might be worth checking them out :)

I was thinking of buying some good running shoes...was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for where to buy, what type/make etc?
    Thanks!

DD told me that if you get running shoes wrong you can easily injure your ankles/knees. She hurt her ankles by running in her old trainers.

I went to the local running shop where they put me on the treadmill to analyse the way I run and then recommended some decent shoes. Not cheap (£80:eek:) but they fit really well and I've had no problems with my ankles. Knees used to get a bit sore, but that's more from not stretching properly and overdoing it.

I'm starting on Week 2 of the podcast today after I realised that by adding 30 seconds to the beginning of the runs in Week 1 (which I had been doing for a while) I'd actually been doing more work than I needed to . I'd been doing 8 x 90sec run + 90 sec walk instead of 6 x 90 sec run + 2min walk in week 2. Should sail through Week 2 then. Yehright................:o

ETA: My shoes are Mizuno Wave Inspire 4 which have a standard midsole and arch support.

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.

just as an additional thought, i know most people on here are using the podcast, but what are your favourite songs/bands/albums to run/excercise to?

whilst walking my dog the other day with the mp3 player on it suddenly occured to me that "can't touch this" by mc hammer has the perfect BPM for running :rotfl:

Although I think Robert Ullrey's podcasts are great, I do think he has quite a strange taste in music! It's not really my cup of tea anyway. Having said that I do think his choices are very well thought out in terms of pacing and tempo.

There was another thread about this a while back 'music to jog to'- might give you some ideas.

I would love to do running, but having poor balance makes it difficult. :(

If you want some good advice, go to a running shop, get them to analyse how you run on the treadmill or whatever, see what shoes they recommend then take a note of them and get them cheap off the internet. They can often recommend the latest model of an established trainer but the models from last season will be half price. I've used Saucony Grid Omnis for years and depending what model I get the price can differ from £40 - £85 (and there's not much difference between models).
