Virgin Media - Wireless?

We've been with virgin for a while now. And we've always had good service.
but my mum has rung up twice in 2 days to try and find out about wireless.
But both times we got a foreign person (who doesnt speak much english just say and i quote "wireless router, i send you wireless router, £40, you have wireless router"...

We were ringing up to see if there is such a thing as a wireless moderm? So that we can just have a sort of 'hub' or something and just use laptops in the house instead of having to connect a desktop to the moderm then connecting a router up to making it wireless etc
We want to cut the router out of the equation.

But we keep ringing virgin media up and just keep getting a foreign person who cant speak very good english.

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a wireless moderm? And do virgin media do one?

If you are on cable, you need the Virgin modem, and a cable/dsl router, so no.

If you are on ADSL via a BT line, then the answer is yes.

is there anyway that moderm could be wireless?

Its just our router has to go:

moderm to computer to router

and im just trying to work out how to get it without the computer in the middle. I think im explaining it right lol!

The computer goes on the end, not in the middle.

modem -- router -- pc

If you use a wireless router, it doesn't need to be physically connected to any pc.

oh ok got that mixed up! Sorry!

But the router has to be connected to our PC with a cable. Does it have to have that cable? If i replaced the pc with a wireless laptop?

Not sure I understand the problem.

If you had a wireless router, you don't need cables, but you will need a wireless adapter for the PC or a wireless enabled laptop instead. You can use cables as well, wireless routers have 4 wired ports as well as 255 wireless.

hmm maybe im not explaining it right.

Our router is connected to our computer by a wire. So your telling me, if that was replaced with a wireless enabled laptop or a wireless adapter in the computer we wouldnt need that cable and our problem would be solved?

What is the issue with the cable? You want to move the PC?

i dont think the computer has a wireless adapter so i need to use a cable to plug it into the router.

I understand what your saying now. Im sure in the future the moderm and router will be the same thing lol!

Are you on Virgin media cable or via a BT line?

What router do you have now?

Still don't quite understand the issue with the cable, unless you want to relocate the PC.

You can get a wireless usb adapter for £15-20.

Router is a Netgear G Mimo

Were thinking of changing the computer to a laptop, but we want the freedom of taking the laptop around the house etc and we thought that you had to plug the router in to one computer for the network to work.

But it sounds like aslong as this laptop is wireless enabled we dont need to plug any computers or laptops into the router.
