We had a waranty from Comet and we got a new laptop.

So you should expect enough vouchers to get a new one of around the same specs, slightly higher I would expect.

We also had a TV nearly 5 years old from JL and we got a new flat screen one to replace the old tube version.

Whats going to happen with the hard drive and your data?

You could have taken the drive out put in an encloser and took the data off it, then put it back in the laptop.

That's exactly what I'd expect too, hopefully enor will receive a similar service...

I've just found the warranty and it states "...vouchers to purchase a new product of at least the equivalent specification" which my guess would be the cheapest macbook at the moment. I can't see that they would be that willing to stump up that much for an obsolete Ibook.

If they do then that would be great, so heres hoping. It would certainly have made paying for the extended warranty worthwhile.

If that's what the warranty states, that's exactly what they have to honour.

It has to be equivalent spec, and as it's a Mac, it must be a Mac, so the least you can expect is vouchers to cover a MacBook with at least the same RAM and HD, or the equivalent matching base model, if the base model exceeded the iBook spec, which of course it will.

If they don't give you enough vouchers, press them constantly as they must honour the T+Cs of the warranty.

I've just spoken to them again as I realised the address they had for me was old and is now empty. Thankfully I caught them just in time and its going to the correct address now.

They still can't tell me how much they are for, apparently I'm to call coverplan but I forgot to get a phone number for them. I will just wait for a plesant suprise in the post.

dsg group imho are excellent for this, we got cover on a fridge freezer and as the warranty was nearly up we called to get some plastic covers off the freezer draws which had broken
Couple of weeks later we got vouchers to full new retail value of freezer as they couldn't get parts anymore

Well vouchers came today - just short of £600 so certainly cannot grumble about service. IT was really easy and had no problems from PC performance at all.

    Thanks for everyones help

Although I'm really please you've got it sorted out, it's a shame that just under £600 won't buy you even the base model MacBook at £699 though, unless of course they will sell you one at this rate. After all they stated, "...vouchers to purchase a new product of at least the equivalent specification".

Any computer will be obsolete in 3 years, so that's not the point, the point is they really haven't honoured the warranty fully.

If not, if I were you (and hey this is MSE after all!), I'd write them a letter putting this point across, and hopefully they'll give you a bit more, after all if it's like for like replacement, they actually haven't gone the whole way, you need £700 to buy a replacement.

They aren't losing out, they have massive insurances to cover this.

I realised this myself a bit later and called them up again. Apparently I can just ask the shop to call them when I'm buying it and they will increase the value of the vouchers. This doesn't help if I want to spend them on something else though I suppose.

I've just got to decide what to spend them on.

That's ok then, well you could buy a new MacBook, they are fantastic machines, the base model is a good spec for the money. Then if you actually didn't want it, sell it immediately on eBay boxed as new (don't open it or anything!) to get at least £600 in cash back ;)
