    In my tummy!!!!!:D

Seriously, I keep them out of any bag, so they don't sweat. I just put them in a bowl raw and eat

    Hi all.

I've collected a big bag of sweet chestnuts after long dog walk yesterday.
I've looked on the net and they are definitely ok and not poisonous. T'would be great to use them in cooking as there's loads more i can go back and collect..they look nutritious and are FREE!

Does anyone know what to do with them??

Can i roast ( eg. pierce and put in oven/micro)

Or could they be a basis for stuffing, or a veggie Xmas dinner loaf??

    Also....can i freeze them??

    Any thoughts appreciated!

Yes you can roast them in the oven. I think you have to slit the skin a little bit before putting them in.

They can also be used as a stuffing or turned into a chestnut puree which could be used in cakes. I've also heard of a chestnut merangue too.

    Personally I love them raw.

Not sure about freezint, but I'm sure someone will know

Lucky you! Can't help you with what to do with them I'm afraid but I went looking for chestnuts near me and they were all tiny and seemed soft (like empty shells) so not a good year for chestnuts near me :(

    Hi jolaaled,

There's an older thread that should help so I've merged your thread with it to keep all the suggestions together.

  • I've looked through the thread, and I don't think anyone has mentioned what I do: I boil the chestnuts for 20 minutes or so and let them cool (I don't bother to pierce them first and it doesn't matter). Then I slice them into two with a sharp knife and scoop out the insides with a strong teaspoon. I find this much faster than any peeling method.

I can put the results into soup or casseroles, and once tried mashing them fairly fine and mixing with whipped eggwhite and a little sugar. Plops on a baking tray turned into tasty little macaroons. Or you can freeze them for Christmas stuffing etc.

There is a handsome and productive sweet chestnut avenue near me, and I soon ran out of patience with peeling. It is best to slice them top to bottom along the edges, if you see what I mean......then each half is shallow and easy to scoop out with the teaspoon. If you slice them round the circumference, it is more fiddly.
