Hi npsmama,
I think peeling them is probably your only option apart from binning them. If you do decide to peel them there are lots of ideas for using them on the main chestnut thread so I've added your post to it.

Is it just me or has it been an ABYSMAL year for foraged chestnuts? They're all tiny. Tasty, but blooming fiddly and too easy to overcook, plus too many empties.
I kind of rely on freezing chestnuts to see me through the year. Does anyone have any suggestions where I can buy some without taking a second mortgage? My farm shop gets imported Italian ones and they're about £6 per kilo
I know that Tesco sells them for about £4 per kilo, but I don't like to use the supermarket unless I have to - sounds daft but I've got a no-supermarkets til xmas (and hopefully it'll end up being ever) personal challenge going on.0 -
I !!!!! them with a folk, put them on top of my woodburner for about 30 mins, turning a few times. Crack the shell, and eat them with a bit of salt, whilst watching trash TV. Couple glasses of mulled wine ! Lovely way to spend an evening !!0

Why does this site not like the word beginnining with 'p', ending with 'k 'with 'ric' in the middle ??
Its what I do with a folk to my chestnuts !!0 -

Life is too short to waste a minute of it complaining about bad luck. Find joy in the simple things, show your love for those around you and be grateful for all that you have.0

Hi Chell,
This earlier thread may help:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

They can be boiled and then frozen or dried in a low oven and reconstiuted in water when you use them.
Watch out for jars of them being reduced after Christmas. I bought several jars reduced to 20p last year in Tesco and have used them throughout the year. The Best before date was 2010.0
