heat oven to about 200C, put a small slit in each chestnut with a knife, chuck 'em in a roasting tray and into the hot oven for about 20 mins. A few will explode but most will be fine!
has anyone roasted chestnuts, peeled and then frozen them?0 -

lol - remember the first time i roasted chestnuts in hot oven - didnt know you had to peirce them first! my gawd - I was convinced the americans were invading!
so - next time i carefully cut slits in them and roasted two bags for chestnut stuffing............and was still in kitchen three hours later shelling the bloody things! I buy the cooked and peeled ones in vacuum bags now. and one bag for us all to roast and eat hot!0 -
Be careful they dont explode in the oven. I cook mine on coals in our barbecue outside.0

I want to try chestnuts in my stuffing & maybe with my sprouts.
I've only ever had chestnuts roasted up Oxford street, you know when they sell them from the fruit stalls. TBH I didn't think much of those.
Jamie uses them in his stuffing recipe.
What type do I buy?
In waitrose they do a bag of frozen ones for £3.99, that sounds expensive to me, is it for sprouts?
Or should I buy fresh?
If so where do I get them? Canned, frozen, fresh?0 -

Whenever I roast cheshnuts I make a mess of them, they are in the oven too long and end up hard and difficult to peel. This year got some from Tesco in a jar, they just need a little warming up from what I can gather so should be easier. The jar was just over £2 but at least there is no waste with them.

most supermarkets sell chestnuts in vaccum sealed bags - already cooked peeled! use those or tinned. believe me, you dont want to spend hours roasting and shelling the dmmed things! done that been there and wont do it again!0

I've been looking for tinned or vaccum packed ones, all I could find was the frozen ones.

Sainsburys have them fresh for 1.99, slit and 15 mins in the oven for eating, taste lovely, not sure if you'd do something different for stuffing??
Morrisons have them fresh for 1.50. Not sure if there's a difference in bag size. Sure they said to cook for 30 mins last year.
I've tried the ones in a jar and they went off really quick... whereas the bag of fresh ones have kept fine in the fridge. Morrisons have the ready done ones in packets/jars or whatever they are in on offer and at various places around the store at the moment.0 -
they are in the veg section, try waitrose.:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
