thanks everyone for your ideas and comments. I ended up cooking them in the microwave then mixed them with some cooked sprouts. Made them into a veggie meal by using up all the odd bits hanging around the fridge that needed using up i.e. fried a few mushrooms with a chopped onion then mixed the whole lot with a tablespoon of fromage frais and some low fat hummous! Might sound strange but tasted gorgeous!

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have never cooked chestnuts, only used chestnut puree to make the christmas stufffing and we all love that so will be brave and try some roasted chestnuts, thanks!

Do you think if I include some boiled chestnuts with the brussels my son will finally eat his sprouts? Maybe not :(

Just an early prompt to everyone, that it's nearly sweet chestnut season:j

I love them raw, I know lots like them roasted and put them in stuffing.

But any other ideas for them? There's a HUGE tree down my road

    I can't wait!!

(oh be sure not to try and get horse chestnuts - poisonous. I know most probably know this, but everyone I work with didn't:wall:)

  • We have loads of 'conker' trees around here....but how do you tell the differences between them and sweet chestnuts? Are they the casings with no spikes?

Conkers have big thick cases with spikes that don't really hurt that much to touch, and when opened, the nut is big and round.

Sweet chestnuts come in very very spikey cases, that really will give you a nasty !!!!!!! They're generally a lot smaller too. When open, there will be around 1-3 nuts, which are sort of ovally shaped. Peel these with a pen knife if eating them raw, be sure to get the "pith" off too. Or keep the skin on if roasting them
