why are paypal payments so slow?

The last few times I have bought from Ebay (I am only a buyer) it has taken well over a week for paypal to credit the seller, I dont recall it being this bad until fairly recently last few purchases

I always pay on time 90% within an hour or two of auction ending, or the following morning

Now I bought a item on 23rd April via Paypal using visa debt card according to Ebay the seller got payment on 2-May-08. Its a small item and hasn't come yet. Now I ain't pushing the seller as I wouldn't want to send a good until payment even though I have 100% feedback (33) and Ebay member for over 3 years.

It kind of puts me off using ebay as I wanted the item like now

    - Has your debit card expired?
    - Do you have the same problem with credit cards?

We have the same problem, apparantley its because pay pal operates via an e-cheque now, so it takes longer.
Dont ask me why ithas changed - like you we paid quickly and the product was with us in a mater of days, it now takes days for the payment to clear, then a few days for post - annoying hey!!!!!

I remember it saying some where in a email that its via echeque (cant find it now but I seem to recall it mentioning it) I have 2 emails one about wining item from ebay and other paying item from Paypal, no mention of echeque but I do recall it saying some where must had deleted email or spam filter blocked it.

I think this whole delay tactic messes buyers and sellers and may hurt ebay, I certainly think twice now for urgent items.

PayPal sometimes uses eCheques (which are slooooooooow) because something in your account is setup wrong.

Usually it's instant EXCEPT for eCheques.

Check though you account settings - it defaults to e-cheque when you change cards, update etc, then you have to set up instant payment again, it happened to me.

See also this thread - e-cheques don't always mean you have something set up wrongly:

Is it possible that you've been having this issue on every payment since December?
